Stop lease and cc payments, and then what?

I have a car I'm leasing that I'm current on all payments for. I have reached the conclusion that I will be filing bk. The reading I've done here and in the Nolo book indicate that I will qualify, etc...I will be consulting w/an attorney, but I don't have money for everyday expenses w/o steady income. (I'm working on that). I will have to use some credit cards just to put gas in my, I mean Nissan's car. If I stop paying the lease and my car is taken I won't have transportation to interview or work. Buying an older reliable car sounds great, but what do I buy it with when I don't have the money to put gas in my car? I'm applying for jobs outside of teaching, I'm not eligible for unemployment, and I certainly don't want to do another balance transfer into my checking account. Any suggestions? Thank you everyone for your suggestions, patience and understanding!!!

Well sounds like you are taking the first step looking for jobs outside your profession, sometimes you gotta do that. Hopefully you can find something that can at least meet your needs. I wouldn't be to picky either, I mean apply at Wal Mart or someplace and even if you just get a few part time hours till something better comes that's better than nothing.

    I hope you do good

JR, what do you recommend about the car lease situation? How long do you think I'll be able to keep the car w/o them coming and getting it? Do you see any other angle on a car w/my situation?

JR, I forgot to ask how long you think they'll let me keep the car after I quit paying?

Probably wouldn't take more than 2 months for them to send someone to collect it. So probably until your 2nd missed payment. Then they'd send someone to repo it. If you can't pay it then just don't leave any valuables in the car. Some places move faster than others.

You might also see if someone can help you with the payment once or twice while you try to get on your feet.

Thanks for your input, JR. W/o $ to buy a used car it sounds like I'm better off keeping the car lease current and letting the rest of the cc payments go since I'm 99.99% sure I'll be filing.

I think it depends on the company. I was over 2 mths late before I filed and I still have my SUV in my driveway.
Is there public transportation in your area? Could you use that to get around?
And I agree with JR about stop paying CC's.

                  Thanks for the input, folks!

I stopped all automatic payments for credit cards and got a P.O. box address for all future mail from them. I am keeping the car for now. The lease payment for July is too close to get the payment stopped anyway. Public Transportation is something I'm not sure about, but a possibility depending on what advice I get from a lawyer. The job section of the classifieds in the local paper today had a quarter page of listings. Not good. I can see how people become desperate and do things they might have considered unthinkable. I'll make my list of lawyers in the immediate area who specialize in bk over the weekend. I will also get some exercise this weekend as well. I need to give myself a pat on the back for all of the information I've gathered/organized over the last five days. This forum and the Nolo book have been tremendously helpful (understatement). I especially appreciate that other members didn't beat me up when I was panicking by telling me to read all the stickies,etc...I know I asked some questions that were answered there and elsewhere. I know that now. I went to the cemetery today with my mom and and a longtime family friend to visit his late wife's grave. (I met this couple when I was four years old.) The wife moved on/made her transition six years ago. It helped put things in perspective! It seems impossible that that much time could have passed since then. The sooner I address this situation the sooner I can rebuild my life. I didn't realize that my situation (which I created) doesn't make me a criminal, a loser or anything like that. My upbringing/programming is being deleted as I educate myself. I have to remember to pace myself and get enough rest. Driving myself into the ground will only make me ill...and that is something I cannot 'afford' in all ways you can take the meaning. Another blog! ;) Thanks all!
