Will Cable/Cell Phones Be Shut Off If Included

    Hi,
I know that various public utilities (gas, electric, land line phone) etc. cannot shut off your service because you have filed bankruptcy, and must continue to service a debtor. The only thing I have read is that they may charge a deposit.

However, what about for example cable companies, cell phone providers, etc. If these debts are listed, will they shut off service?

These are a bit more ambiguous as they are not utilities regulated in the same ways as some others.

    Thanks..

Im actually not sure. Are you current on ur cell phone? I guess it wouldnt hurt to call and speak with their financial dept.

As far as our case went, we were current and have not had any problem with our cell or cable. Have not had to pay any deposit etc. We listed them on the papers our attorney provided us to fill out but I don't know that they were notified of ur filing. Hope this helps.
I'll be watching, you may never know when or how, but I'll be there. I am there now....

If you have a balance that is included in the BK, my *guess* is that you will lose the service. However, I don't think those companies would be able to charge you termination fees, etc.

If you're current, and the BK does not affect those companies, I don't think it will be an issue.

why would you list your cable bill and cell phone on your bankrupcy papers if they are current - aren't they just like gas, water, electricity - they are expences, but not debts?

There is a part of the paperwork that asks about rentals, contracts & such. (I'm referring to form7.) It seems a cell contract should go there. Cable may or may not have a contract... (Where I am, the cable co doesn't require contracts.)
