Credit unions have been known to freeze funds to collect past due payments, however since your debts have already been discharged, there is nothing for them to collect.Originally posted by Busted42was wondering if credit union can keep my deposits into my checking account...I had a debt to them discharged a few months ago, but I kept the account open with a few bucks in there.....thanks.
I understand that most credit unions will close your account if you BK on them. But, if your account is still open, I don't think you have anything to worry about. You might try a few small deposits to see what they do.Chapter 13 Filed 4/03/06  341 Meeting Complete 5/11/06 :yes2:

I've been doing that and they are putting them in my account...I still have a car payment that I make to them, on time every month, so, maybe that is why they kept my saving and checking accounts open? The reason I bring this all up is because my mortgage is automatically taken out of my checking account every month on the 15th, yet I've been sending money orders to the mortgage co. in time to reach them before the 15th for the past 6 months or so....I have been charged 15 bucks twice(by the credit union)because my money order didnt get there until the 16th....so, I'm just hoping that if I deposit my mortgage payment into my checking account, the CU won't freeze my account. Make sense???Originally posted by aa06a47Credit unions have been known to freeze funds to collect past due payments, however since your debts have already been discharged, there is nothing for them to collect.

Yes, it does make sense. If they haven't froze it in 6 months, I don't think they will freeze it. You might call them and ask them the status of your accounts. Since the debt was legally discharged, about all they can do is require you to close your account. They cannot keep your money now.
Credit Unions are pretty good places to bank, especially if you have very little money. They don't charge you out the butt for everything. I have been in one for 20 years now. I opened an account with a new bank right before filing BK, but that was really to get one closer to home so I could get cash out of the ATM without being charged. I have probably saved 20 bucks a month doing this. The credit union allowed 5 free per month, but it was 25 miles from my home and everytime I used another bank, I got charged anywhere from 2-4 buck charge. Since I usually took out 60-100 bucks, that was a pretty steep % rate to take money out.Chapter 13 Filed 4/03/06  341 Meeting Complete 5/11/06 :yes2:
