    Unregistered CA's

As my saga continues, I received a collection attempt from a collection agency outside of my state. I looked online and saw that they are not registered to collect in Oregon. I filed a complaint online, and called the complaint division. I received a copy of correspondence that was essentially an apology and that they would cease collection efforts until they had complied with state law.

If you are dunned by a collector, it might be worth your time to check yoru state laws.

Oregon has a website that you can search for any licensed businesses. In addition, they have phone numbers you can call to verify a registration or license. I don't know about any other states.

I used to take the calls in front of the computer and have them answer all my questions about who they were, the original creditor, the amount in question, a file or account number, a mailing address and a phone number. By the time I had noted all of the details in my records I'd know if they were legitimate or not by pulling them up on the web.

Only once did I catch a collection agency operating contrary to state law and I told them so. The man seemed a little suprised by the way the call had gone and then he couldn't apologize enough. It was always a thrill to make them jump through my hoops instead of them giving me a hard time.
Discharged November 2008 100 days after filing no-asset Chapter 7. We intended to let a two-year-old vehicle go back to the bank and reaffirm an inexpensive ten-year-old SUV and our home mortgage. In the end we surrendered ALL of our vehicles and reaffirmed NOTHING. We'll "ride through" our mortgage after the court ruled it an undue hardship.
