Cashing checks from banks I owe $ to.

I have a check refund from my insurance company and the bank the insurance co uses is one of the CC companies I owe money to. If I take it to my bank and cash it rather than deposit it, I should be safe, right?

The bank has nothing to do with the refund, I just over paid on my insurance by $159 and the insurance co. sent the overpayment back.

I regularly (for about 6 months now) have cashed my paycheck at Wells Fargo who I owe money to and there has not been any problem at all.
Very fortunate in the grand scheme of things but have learned my lesson.

Oops, I left out part of the details. One of the checks is from a bank that isn't local and so I'd have to cash it at my bank.

you can't cash a check off of your bank if your account is negative (if its drawn off another bank) It will flag on the teller's system, and when a supervisor comes over to see the override- they will look at your account balances to see if your accounts have enough money in them to pay the check if it returns.

Now a check drawn on your bank is a different story.. They can't refuse it, as long as the other account has the funds
