Can we ask for attorney/private trustee referral on the forum?

I was wondering if there is any forum rule regarding members posting question asking for attorney/private trustee referral in his state.

I think it would be helpful and convenient, if I can ask for some recommendation/suggestion as to who is who in my state that i should talk to. I have heard of horror stories with regards to unresponsive attorneys etc. I hope to avoid that experience.

Others have posted their locations, hometown and Court where they are filing. They've gotten referrals to attnys or info about bad attnys. Also learned about different Trustees so they know what to expect when they go to Court.

The help may be limited tho. While there may be more members from your general area and Court, people come and go here. There may be old members from near where you live but they don't visit the Forum any more. Their BK is behind them and life has moved on.

Feel free to post any info you're comfortable giving out and see what kind of help you get.

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.

We would prefer that information regarding specific attorney's and trustees be passed via private messages. So you can post asking about such things, but in the last line of your post, instruct people to respond to you via a PM.

Plus, there are numerious sites you can go to to research attorney's and so forth, and as SF pointed out, the response here would be fairly limited for any specific geographical area.

Do you have any links for these sites? I would like to do some research for my area in preparation.

Ways to get a bankruptcy attorney

Respectfully, two of the methods to find a bankrupty attorney mentioned in this thread are not the way to go. The first method is to ask a member of this blog for a referral. The members are terrific individuals, and their advice is often accurate and helpful. However, except for their one bankruptcy experience with a lawyer, they do not know the lawyer. The other suggestion was to use a commercial directory or website. That is also a bad idea, because you will only reach lawyers who pay to advertise on that particular site.

I suggest one of two approaches. First, call your local Bar Association and ask for a referral. The staff may give you three or so names from a list, because they are required to do so (after all, the Bar Association is supposed to serve all due paying lawyers, not just the competent ones). Take the names, but then ask the staffer: "Look, can you tell me who YOU would use if you needed to file a bankruptcy?" Bar Association staff knows the good ones and the bad ones.

Another approach: Call a law firm that does NOT advertise bankruptcy. Ask for bankruptcy assistance. They will give you one or two or three names. Then call another firm that does not do bankruptcy, and do the same thing. Do this with three or four non-bankruptcy firms. One or two names will be common to all of the lists -- call those one or two lawyers and get a consult.
Nobody dislikes bad lawyers more than good lawyers -- the bad ones give the rest of us a bad name.

            Good luck.
