I helped my neighbor begin a Chapter 7!

I have an elderly friend that I just met recently. Well, through chatting with her, I realized her finances were in very dire straights. The very next day we went to see my bk attorney. Got another attorney in the office. But my friend presented all her paperwork and I think she's going to have a straight forward case of Chapter 7.

While the attorney was making copies, she said she feels this huge weight lifted.

My friend said God must have sent me to her because we've only known each other about two months. All her cc bills are from when her husband got very sick and then died. She's been paying the cc for last 7 years!

She said if not for me, she would have never had the guts to file bk.

I wonder how many other elderly people suffer paying medical bills etc because they are just too afraid to file bk?

I typed up a script for her to say to any collectors that call. On the piece of paper is also a place to jot cc name, rep name, and date. I told her if they call you again, say they are harassing you and tell them to call the lawyer and stop calling her. Told her to get caller ID.

She'll be filing just as soon as she can come up with the $$$ which will be sometime next month.

Unfortunately for me, I can't file until Sept/Oct. But now I have a good guinea pig to walk through the process

It's nice that I can feel like a Godsend to somebody

Glad you were there at the right time and place to help your neighbor, twuoo.

Sometimes I wonder if there wasn't such a stigma against bankruptcy, how many others who end up filing bankruptcy because of personal financial decisions could hubby and I help stay out of financial trouble if we were able to talk more openly about our own poor financial decision-making and the consequences?

      That's really kewl, Twuoo.

Seems you put in the right place at the right time to help this lady.

Poor thing. Dealing with loosing her life partner and then paying his debts for all these years. Talk about suffering in silence??!!

It just twerks me that so many younger folk abandon their elders in their Senior years.

They were there for us. Feeding us and wiping our butts when we couldn't do for ourselves. Many people just park their elders/parents in a "Home" so they don't have to deal with them.

      That's just not right!!
      Filed Ch 7 - 09/06
      Discharged - 12/2006
Officially Declared No Asset - 03/2007
      Closed - 04/2007

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.

Ironically, she has two sons. And even her mom borrow money to her siblings, but not to her!

        How sad is that!?

I agree with you SF, I just don't understand how children abandon their parents. Makes no sense to me.
