In an emergency like an imminent house foreclosure, a lawyer can file your case "short" with an absolute minimum of the bankruptcy forms completed within 24 hours with 15 days to get the rest of the required forms filed.

However, when it's not an emergency (and 99% of the time it isn't), how long it takes to file depends on your financial circumstances (is a business involved in your personal debt, for ex), how good your financial records are, how long it takes to pull together all the required receipts, tax forms, pay stubs, etc. Also depends on how busy the law office is as well. Most of the time, filing Ch 7 or Ch 13 is accomplished within a few weeks to a few months.
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

    06/01/06 - Filed Ch 13
    06/28/06 - 341 Meeting
    07/18/06 - Confirmation Hearing - not confirmed, 3 objections
10/05/06 - Hearing to resolve 2 trustee objections
01/24/07 - Judge dismisses mortgage company objection
    09/27/07 - Confirmed at last!
06/10/11 - Trustee confirms all payments made
    08/10/11 - DISCHARGED !

    10/02/11 - CASE CLOSED
Countdown: 60 months paid, 0 months to go

My attorney called it a "skeletal filing" and we filed the bare minimum - which includes a list of creditors. Then we had as lrprn says, 15 days to get the full filing done.

This can serve 2 purposes, #1 - make sure that all the #'s are accurate, i.e. bank account and other balances as of filing date, exact debt balances, etc. And #2, creditors don't get the full picture for 15 more days in the event any were thinking of attending the 341 or worst, objecting to the discharge.
        Filed Business Chapter 7: 7/11/07
        341 Meeting: 8/8/07 Asset Case
        US Trustee reviewed case/resolved 9/14/07
        Discharged: 10/11/07 Closed: 11/2/08
