    Does Anyone Know? USAA Question

I've done a lot of perusing for USAA info here as I have both a credit card and auto insurance through them. I see where some people have had a problem keeping their auto insurance through them and some have not after including some form of USAA credit in their BK.

One poster from AZ mentioned that in her state, they could not deny insurance coverage based on the BK. Another poster from KS mentioned in her state, that they could deny insurance coverage based on the BK.

Does anyone know of, or where to find, a list of states where denying the coverage would/would not be permissible? I have done my normal hunting on the web and have turned up nothing.

    Thanks if you can help.

You should do a search for the insurance board for your state. It's usually www.insurance.your state.gov
It can be hard to find, but it should be in the code somewhere. The wording has to do with it being illegal to not renew a policy based only on credit score, when the policy would be renewed if the credit score was not looked at. I am sure it sounds much more professional than that.

I have USAA and have so far been okay with our auto insurance, but the rep told me not to cancel anything because they won't insure us later on.

      Thanks Amelia...

Did you BK on any credit with them?

Yes- and a large amount- $20000 to be exact! I know alot of people have some type of emotional ties to USAA. Not sure why.
I am only a member because my husband's family is, so my heart won't be broken if they break up with us

Yeah, well my Dad is ex-military and got me that insurance...so I guess I'm paranoid that he'll find out...it's a mind screw thing for me. I'm in the process of coming to terms with what I am going to say to people who do find out (really only care about family) but I'm not quite there yet.

Plus, I really like the rate I'm paying. They gave me a nice good driver discount after being with them for 10 years.

          Appreciate your response.

Here's an update about USAA. I finally spoke with someone that brought their brain to work. You can try to get products with them in 7 years. You don't get a lifetime ban like I was told. But they changed their rules. After July 2007, if you file bankruptcy and they are in it, they will not renew your auto or homeowners policy, regardless of the chapter or amount you BK'd them for. So if you have them, start looking for new insurance. I still have two bank accounts with them and I've been a member almost 13 years.

That is interesting informaion. I filed chapter 7 in October and my auto insurance just came up for renewal last week. I paid it and it seems to be fine. Also, the rep I talked to a few weeks ago said I could keep insurance but if we dropped insurance we could not try to get a new policy. I wonder which employee is correct?

We got insurance through them while in an active 13, though they were not included. We are military and bank with them.

I filed in November, wait and see. In AZ they are not allowed to cancel a policy, but the letter I got from them stated that they were exercising their right to not renew. There is someone else on this board too that in the same situation as me. And that person said they weren't supposed to get renewal info and neither was I. I got all the renewal information, then shortly after, I got the notice that it would not be renewed. I think you may get a bad surprise, but who knows. The quality of service has gone down somewhat in the last couple of years.
