does anyone know if bankruptcies are published in the paper?

we live in a small town where everyone knows everyone's business anyways and i'm hoping that these don't get published.

if we file, we'll probably file in another county anyway, as there are no bankruptcy lawyers in our town.

Bankruptcy filings are public records. Some towns publish them some don't. But it is public knowledge which anyone can obtain if they wish.....

It doesn't matter where your lawyer is from, you have to file your BK based on where you live, not where they have their office. For example, I went to this big BK firm out of Cleveland Ohio, even though I live about 150 miles from Cleveland. They had a branch office in Columbus Ohio, about 70 miles from where I live, so assigned my case to one of their Columbus lawyers, but they filed the BK case with my local county, Muskingum, and my 341 meeting was in the local courthouse, not in Cleveland or Columbus.

Check your newspaper to see if they list BKs, then you'll know the answer to your question. Neither of my local newspapers do, thank goodness. It is public record though, so if anyone decided to snoop to see they could find out, but that would be a pretty pathetic individual in my opinion. Good luck, hope you can keep your privacy.

I know some places that don't have courthouses, so they have to do everything in the city next to them, so you would file there and not where you live at.

that's true Cali. Actually I live in a small town of about 2000, and the town where I had my court dates is about 15 miles away. But I think most counties have courthouses, so I still don't think the OP would be able to file in a different county, or in a county of his or her choosing, but in the county required by where they lived. I'm actually closer to another town (10 miles away) that has a courthouse, but couldn't file there because we live right on the county line and the closer city is in a different county than mine, so we got assigned to the farther away courthouse.

I am lucky to live in a big Metro area, so my city is in the county but not the city where I would file at.
