Doing your taxes online for free

There's a new law this year that if you make $54,000 or less, you can file online for free.

Go to www.irs.gov website for more info.

Watch out when you click their links, it takes you to other websites and you need to read the fine print cuz some of the other sites you use will charge between $10-30 to file you State, even though they offer the IRS for free.

As a sidenote, I used the equivalent of TurboTax online rather than spending $40 to buy the software and then having to spend more money to efile.

It cost me about $20 to efile both the Fed and State using the TurboTax.

I thought it was a pretty good online program and would recommend it.

We make too much to do that....but the cool thing is, I did TANGO by H&R block and had so many technical difficulties, they refunded the $70 and so I can complete both state and federal for free. Not bad~~

Did mine online this weekend...it was pretty easy. Total cost was $9.95 to file our state return, paid by debit card. We were anxious to get it filed and receive our refund (and spend it, of course) before filing chapter 7. By e-filing and requesting direct deposit we should receive the refund in as little as ten days. That time frame works well as we should be ready to file in 2 -3 weeks. Here is the interesting part...I had already done the taxes by hand, but by using the online software our refund increased by $1000. Did it on two different sites just to make sure it was correct. Gotta love computers (sometimes).

Thanks for posting the info, but you've been able to file for free for a few years now.

        I haven't filed yet.

I used turbotax online just to see how my refunds are, then I go to my CPA and have them do it. He always gets me back about $100-200 more than the Turbotax somehow, so that pays for his services, or close enough. I have this crazy idea that I'm less likely to get audited if a CPA does it, and of course he would represent me free if I did. It's not that I am hiding anything but I've heard that audits are a real pain and you have to deal with some first class a-holels sometimes.

Last year though he only got me a little bit more than turbotax would have, so now I'm thinking about just using turbotax, but I am afraid if I do the change in things might make me more apt to get audited... It's kind of like a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of thing!
