Noobie question...
Due to having to take Medical Disability leave from my job, I am needing to file bankruptcy. I asked my tax preparer who gave me a name. I called this atty, and was told he didn't do that kind of work, but recommended someone else. I phoned their office and gave my name and said that I would like an appt. w/ Mr. xxxx to discuss a personal bankruptcy. I was put on hold fr a minute and when she came back to me, I was told that he charged $100 for the initial visit and then $1000 for the bankruptcy...Was that a problem? Would I like to think about it and get back to them?
I told her the fee was not a problem, but I was used to an initial free consult. "Well, Mr. xxxx doesn't do that." Told her I'd call back.
I, like most people think my case is different, and want more than "cookie cutter forms and difficulty talking to an asst. This atty. is not listed under "Bankruptcy Atty's where many of them list fees of $175 - $300 - $475 plus court fees.
I got the feeling that this first atty. didn't really want to do it, so just quoted a high fee,
What should I expect to pay an atty? How much help can I expect from them? Shouldn't the first visit be free? How can I choose a good lawyer who will represent me?
I know that this has prob. been discussed to death here, but couldn't find anything when I searched. TIA for your help and to this forum for being here.
