Well, we told them that we weren't going to rent from them and we wanted to get our cashier's check back. Surprise! They came back and said they could do a two year lease. Just like a child. Trying to the push the limits with us. We decided that if it was this much of a hassle with them just trying to get the place that we didn't want them as a landlord. We already have another place that is willing to consider in spite of the bankruptcy. Thanks everyone for your feedback and I will definitely be checking out that website.

Exactly our thinking. I just didn't want to walk away and then not have a house but this other person seems very nice so I'm taking this as a sign that we weren't supposed to get the first house and we have just avoided a year's worth of headaches.Originally posted by AngelinaCat View PostThat is very good news!!! Just had a thought related to the whole "possible preforclosure" thing you were talking about before. If someone did try "rent skimming", that is to say renting out thier house about to be forclosed on while not paying the mortgage (which can actually land you in jail BTW) they couldnt really force the tenant to pay rent, or evict them.
What I mean is, if your rent skimming you are not likely to take a tenent to court, especially if the tenant has verbalized that they know you are rent skimming (Your honor, the tenant has not been paying rent on the house I abandoned). I bet if you cross referenced forclosures/preforclosures and rental adds you could live in a new preforclosure every 6 months rent free!
. You could even make a documentary about it. Ok this is obviously a bad idea, but I bet it would work, until someone shot you (believe it or not rent skimmers tend to make bad decisions as well).
Not only am I not a lawyer, the California BAR association has sent me numerous letters telling me not to even THINK about going to law school. In fact, the lay advice I provide is not even good. In the end remember, you get what you pay for, and here in BK land were not the best at paying.

Quick Update - We dropped that place and went with another one. We just got approved yesterday and I feel so much better. The people for the second place were so nice and didn't make us jump through nearly as many hoops as the first place. I feel good about my future landlord.
It's also $100/month cheaper and I get another two weeks to finish packing.
