exact same situation
I totally and completely understand your situation. let me give you a rundown of my situation:
my mother also has the same problem of not being able to divorce because of the cultural pressures and arranged marriages and such. my dad decided to pay for all his brothers weddings/engagements/new wifes wedding jewelry, etc. he paid for EVERYTHING! (now that I am engaged he says he is broke because of paying for us and such but htat is besides the point). for 20 years, he did not let my mother work because she would (and i quote) "run away once she had money."
now in the past 7 or 8 years, my father decided to get a big house and have all his brothers and mother and sister live with him. he paid for eveyrone's expenses and of course that left him with a 100,000 debt. a house she didnt want. but hte past few months had my dad foreclose the house and etc. now that i have gotten a new car as a gift from my in laws, he is pressuring me to put it in his sister's name, since it will be repossesed since he is of course bankrupt. never mind hwen i reminded him of the fact that i am his child and they will most liekly reposses what i have, and my mothers credit will of course be ruined. at the time my dad said it didnt effect my mother then later when my mom got a letter he said the law had changed. idiot. then he was adamant it wouldnt affect us. i could have sworn it did if the parent died or such, but the car is a gift and will be put down as such.
i have made an appointment with my financial counselor at my college to get more information, since he is adamant that my car will be repossesed and thus should be put in his sisters name. no thank you. he refuses to believe anythig i say and why should i believe him at this point? but i have been seeing online and so far my possesions should not be reposseed. the car only if he had cosigned but his name is NO WHERE on the car. it is directly from my in laws car auction, to myself.

sorry to hear about your situation hotpink-sometimes theres just things we have no control over or can change, but yes from one daughter to another take my advice do not put the car in his sisters name-i mean you received it as a gift from your in laws has nothing to do with him. his bankruptcy can not affect you unless the car had his name on it which you clarified it does not so you should not have to worry...unless has he taken any debt out in your name? I should hope not. and one thing I have learned I do NOT trust my fathers word on anything now always investigate on your own-good luck.Originally posted by hotpink View PostI totally and completely understand your situation. let me give you a rundown of my situation:
