Question do you have to cancel health insurance?

I read somewhere that you might have to cancel health insurance before filing for bankruptcy is this true?-also will bankruptcy higher life insurance/health/car insurance monthly premiums?
    Filed-10/2008

    Discharged-3/17/2009

Absolutely not. Keep the parents health policy especially as they get older.

As far as higher premiums, I have seen it go both ways, some higher, some not affected at all.

I don't see why you would have to cancel your health insurance...is it private insurance (not through an employer)? Maybe if it is a private policy where you cannot afford to pay the premiums, and they can't lower them....but otherwise I think that it would be a bad idea to cancel any medical insurance. After all, without it, you could end up with even more debt.

As far as car insurance, I haven't heard anything about our premimums being raised due to our bankruptcy. It probably depends on the particular company, though.

Absolutely do NOT cancel the health insurance. Part of our debt is old medical bills from when we had no insurance.

No. Your health insurance is an allowable expense on your schedules.

BK has not increased my health insurance (though that is through my employer but I do pay some of it) nor my car insurance. I do not believe that is legal (to raise insurance premiums due to BK) in California but have never actually verified that.

          Good luck,
