Filing alone VS. hiring a lawyer

Any thoughts on this?

I ask because I just had to file.

I had lost my job over the summer, and couldn't make payments.

I own NOTHING, except a bed a tv, some movies, and minimal jewlery. If they really want it that bad they can have it.

What have others' experiences been?

I recommend hiring an experienced attorney to file your BK. You'll most likely have a lot of questions that need answering throughout the process, and if hired an experienced attorney and what that you work well with. They'll be a valuable tool and enabling you to understand everthing that is going on.

If money is a probably, 99% of BK attorney will accept monthly payments until his/her fee is paid in full. Once paid in full, they will file the petition for you. All you'll need to do is get all your fanancial paperwork in order, and review the petition for accuracy.

If you are unemployed and don't have any money with which to make payments to an attorney maybe you could wait until you find another job before filing. After doing it myself I cannot imagine having done it without an attorney. I haven't seen too many BK attorneys that didn't have reasonable payment plans.
If you don't have an income right now then your bill collectors are pretty limited about what they can do to you. Garnishment isn't exactly an option and you said the few items you own, you don't mind giving up.

Already filed folks!

the lawyers in my area absolutely refuse payments.

Not too worried about it though. I took a few books out of the library, and they made it seem really very easy.

Actually, in his situation the Trustee will probably write tinroof off pretty quick. Remember it's all about the money. I'd say get it before you're re-employed or while searching. I think his BK will be painless at this point. Good luck! Let us know, I think yours will take one meeting and that'll be it.

If you are employeed he may say, "you're single, go Chapter 13" (he can). Get it over ASAP and you're done with it. Remember he can't force cash out of you and the company that would pick up your stuff would likely refuse it. It costs him about $350.00 to send a truck out. It's all a scam, the creditors get $5.00 each in the end.

I already tried to use a credit counselor. (I also stated that in the paperwork) That, on top of all of my other things was just too much. I have since gotten another job, but after paying rent, utilities, buying food, I have NOTHING left over at the end of the month. Not even pocket change. If they want my lint, they can definitely have that.

Seriously though, I am not really worried about it. I own nothing, I have a ton of debt, and I just can't pay it. Any of it. I am barely able to get by having a roof over my head and putting food in my tummy.
