    Question Auhorized CC user

    I filed on 4/13/09, 341 meeting on 5/27. I posted earlier about needing to have some sort of credit card in order to rent a car, a few people responded but no one seemed to be able to speak to whether I could now (before my 341) apply for a secured credit card. This card would not be used for purchasing anything, at all, not even the rental car... it would just be used to make the reservation (in my city, you need a credit card, debit cards don't cut it, even if they have the logo, even with money in the back) BUT, you can pay with a debit card upon return of the car.

    Anyway, I'm digressing. My question: if my parents were to add me as an AU (authorized user) on one of their major credit card accounts, would my BK show up on their credit reports? Would my AU status with them be affected by my pending bankruptcy? They have pristine credit, I would not want to effect theirs negatively. Can anyone speak to this?

    Many thanks.

    If you are an authorized user your BK should not show on your parents CR. Sometime errors are made by the creditor when reporting - but AU status in no way affects the TL for your parents.

    If you are a joint card holder - then the BK will show on the TL. There is no way you can become a joint card holder in an active BK.

      Not interested or asking about joint card holder, only AU. Can I become an AU during an active BK? Also, if anyone has an answer to how soon after filing you can apply for a secured card. Thanks.

        What does TL stand for? Total Liability?

          TL = tradeline

          I don't know if you can get authorized user (AU) status with an open BK. Also don't know about the secured card issue during open BK.

            Update

            Here is an update- I received my Capitol One authorized user Visa credit card without any ado. So, even though I'm in an open BK, I do have a credit card. If anyone else out there is fortunate enough to have someone who trusts them to add as an authorized user, that avenue is out there. It's my understanding that authorized users are still reported to the three unions- but that goes both ways. If the account holder pays on time you reap the rewards of that good credit. But if the account holder goes delinquent, you get hit as well.

            For what it's worth.
