debt acquired before marriage in a community property state

    Hello Everyone,

I am planning on marrying a wonderful lady who has a pile of debt that was acquired before we met.

I understand that if the debt was incurred before the marriage I am not responsible for it.

Since she is not able to file a bankruptcy for a number of reasons, will this affect my credit scores and will the collection folks mess with me?

    Thanks

Debt acquired before marriage in a community property state

    Hello Everyone,

I am planning on marrying a wonderful lady who has accumulated a lot of debt. Not her fault, but another story.

Anyway she is not in a position to file bankruptcy and I am concerned that her creditors may harrass me or damage my credit.

I understand they cannot force me to pay the bills.

Also I own a home that I am paying on. Once we are married and our funds are co-mingled can a creditor file a claim on the house?

    Thanks,

Debt acquired prior to marriage isn't your responsibility. Your credit should not be dinged.
Were I you, I'd not comingle assets with a spouse who is in financial difficulty. No joint bank accounts nor, should you put her on the deed to your house.

D@O, You have posted the same thread in two different places. This is confusing and also against the rules.. I'm sure it was a mistake. 'Hub

Hi down@out, I merged your two threads into this one on the 'General Bankruptcy Talk' forum, as it is against the forum rules two post the same question in more than one place. Doing so makes it difficult for readers to follow the various trains of thought in the threads.

          Thanks.
