    Bankruptcy while abroad

A few months ago, my family had to unexpectedly move abroad to care for a sick family member. Though I originally thought my employment prospects here would be good, that is not turning out to be the case. I'm looking at long term unemployment and some form of government supported re-training and lanquage studies. When we left the U.S., my wife and I both had good jobs and had no problems paying our bills.

I've had no problem getting an Economic Hardship forbearance for our student loans, but I'm concerned about what to do about our credit card debt. It is in the ~25K range and we have only limited unemployment aid coming form our new country's government.

If good employment does not come along soon, we've been considering the option of bancruptcy. I've read that you must be resident in the US to file for bancruptcy. Is this true? Is there any recourse for US citizens who become unemployed or face extreme medical bills while living abroad? I'd appreciate any information about what our options are in this situation.

    Thanks,
    Elliot

You should live in the city where you plan to file for bankrupcy at least 2 months. In NY, it's 3 months. So make sure that in the last 6 months you stay 3 or months in the city where you plan to file Bankruptcy.
