Bank of America reporting charge off 9 years after discharge

    Bank of America reporting charge off 9 years after discharge

    Hello!

    I filed for Chapter 7 BK back in 1996. I have not missed any type of payments since then....I've worked very hard to rebuild my credit.

    I have a credit card through providian and my account provides a free monthly credit score for me. I was shocked to see my score drop from 690 to 614, so I panicked a bit and ordered my credit report through transunion.

    I was suprised to see that Bank of America was reporting ">Charged Off as Bad Debt< " on an old credit card. It listed the account as closed "12/2005". That was a credit card that I opened in 1994 and had discharged in my BK in 1996.

    Why would they report this now as charged off? According to my transunion credit report, this will stay on my record till 2012.

    I unfortunatly lost my BK records. So, I'm calling the Courthouse later today to get copies of all my BK documents.

    What should I do to get this off my credit report?

    Write letters to the bureaus, stating that the account was included in BK and when, and that it has been more than 7 years since DLA.
    Most of my information is from personal experience or HOURS and HOURS of online research. When you're searching online, keep in mind there is no guarantee that the info is completely up to date, and your situation is unique from anyone else's. Do your homework, and consult with an attorney so you can make an informed decision.

      Thanks for the advice. Should I include a copy of any of my BK records with my request? I saw that transunion does have a record of my BK on my credit report.

        Wow....I have a sudden happy update on this.

        I accessed my transunion credit report online last night. There was a button to click to dispute if there was something wrong, so I clicked it.

        I just got back an email from transunion with an updated link to my credit report. The Bank of America "adverse account" charge off listing is now gone.
        I can't believe how quickly this was removed from my credit report.

        I have requested a physical copy of my CR from the two other reporting companies, so I'll double check to see if they need disputing also.

        I'm breathing a sigh of reilef....

        I could go into the nightmare of trying to request a paper copy of my CR from transunion....but that's for another thread!

          One last question for those who may be in the know!

          Now that I fixed the error on my credit report....will me credit score bounce back to what it was before? It went from 690 to 614.

              BOA...like any other business can get crazy...

              I had a forclosure on a 2nd mortgage about to happen...I paid it off totally. I got a lett a few months ago (three years after pay off) that I owed them money...I think it got straightened out, I did call & b*tch at them...I am just so tired of the whole bk thing...I'm not dealing with credit/credit cards/anything of this nature for at least a year...let it all settle down!
