Are employers less likely to hire you with bk on record?

I think that can be the case with some companies but not with most. My DH got a new job back in May with no problems and is making significantly more than he did at his last job. He's a programmer and usually works for manufacturing companies (not financial companies) so I guess that helps.Yo ho, Yo ho, a pirates life for me

BK in your past can be a problem, but not always, as DG said.
Especially if you had a significant event, beyond your control happen that resulted in the BK. Job loss, health issues, divorce, and such can throw people for a loop financially. Most employers and Creditors understand that.
Some jobs that might require a Security Clearance or Bonding may not qualify you with a BK in your past. But beyond jobs with special circumstance, an employer cannot hold BK against you when considering you for employment.Filed Ch 7 - 09/06

I do not mind someone pulling a criminal background check, but I do not think it is an employers right to know my financial background. BTW, I am working a part time job where customers hand me significant amounts of cash to pay their bills (this co. never ran a credit check). I am a very honest person so they have nothing to worry about. I just get appalled when I hear that employers want to run a credit check. Hell, I should run a credit check on the ceo, for that matter. Maybe I WANT to know about the financial direction of the person in charge!!!!! Makes me furious!

i totally agree with you bluflax. it seems like once we file we all of a sudden have an X on our back, no matter how responsible we are in everything else. i filed due to circumstances similar to yours and although I have a good driving record i have to pay significantly more for insurance than friends who have DWI's! luckily, my new employer didn't check my credit when looking to hire me, and hasn't asked to check yet. i do have alot of friends who did have their credit checked for their job because they work in places that require high security clearances and such (in DC). i personally think it should be considered descrimination if your solely turned down for something due to credit that has nothing to do with it (insurance rates, jobs, apt. leases, etc...).Originally posted by bluflaxIt really bothers me too. Granted, most of my adult life I have been self employed, but who knows what the next 7 to 10 years hold, and I would hate to be declined employment based on a BK.
I haven't had so much as a driving ticket in 20 years and have not had a late payment on anything until 1 year ago when things started going to crap as a result of my business closing, relocating, and unexpected medical expenses (pet medical expenses, yes. But expenses nonetheless). No felonies, no arrests. Just a good girl overall who just had a financial f-up this year do to life circumstances.
And it ticks me off that auto insurance rates are based on a credit record. How that applies I do not know.

Our car insurance went up after our BK. So we switched to Geico, they didn't care about the BK at all.
Another note on the whole BK/getting a job thing, be careful not to volunteer any information to a company either. Mentioning "why" you went through BK can have more of an impact then the BK itself. In our situation we have two disabled children. Their medical expenses were a big reason why we filed. But you don't want an employer to know you have ongoing medical issues in your family because then they see things like absences, distraction, etc from your job and may hire someone else.Yo ho, Yo ho, a pirates life for me

I got a federal job after filing bankruptcy. It's ridiculous that credit reports are being used as a job qualification nowadays because it becomes almost impossible to better your standing in life if no one will hire a person with a poor credit rating.
It's like when employers only want experienced workers. Like Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry) said in Magnum Force: "How's a man supposed to get experience if no one will give him experience?"Filed: 3/7/06

Originally posted by bluflaxI was talking to a debt workout company yesterday and they informed me that an employer is less likely to hire you if you have a bankruptcy on your record. Is this true? Has anyone had trouble getting abtaining good employment after a bk? Thanks!*** THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE--ONLY A LAWYER CAN PROVIDE THAT. ***
