I managed to get a checking account even though I just got discharged in Nov '04 and two of my discharged creditors included two banks whom I had overdrawn checking accounts with (thanks to my ex drawing all the money out with an ATM card, unbeknownst to me until too late!
). I went to a local small-town bank (one I've never banked with before) and told the accounts lady that I knew I was in ChexSystems and whatever other place she would check with, but that I had been discharged from Chapter 7 and was tired of carrying my cash around. To my amazement she did not even check with any agency. She just looked at my ID, took down my info, and instantly created the account for me. I don't know if this is because they're an easy-going laid-back outfit or if it's because times are slow and they could use some new accounts!
Well, that's a big weight off me. At least now I can mail checks for bills. I won't expect to be able to write checks at the grocery store yet, since I know I'm on the "bad" list. But at least now I don't have to carry around my entire life savings in my purse.
Just wanted you all to know there is hope!
