    USA tent city

If you are truely interested in what is going on in the world I think BBC is the most unbiased and informative.

This story is as annoying as the aftermath of Katrina....this is the USA people,,,Bush is spending TRILLIONS in Iraq and US citizens are living like this?????

That video reminded me of africa videos & china videos of how the people live in caves & crawl in the dirt, but at least they still have a few clothes and maybe a car...I saw them hanging clothes on the clothes lines. One lady said she sleeps in the tent then drives her car to work?

I am glad I do not have to sleep in a tent tonight but there is no guarantee I wont be sleeping in a tent in a year from now.

You can love Bush and go with him to spend money & kill muslims all you want. You can prefer war & killing americans on their way to kill muslims instead of getting people into jobs & housing-That is your prerogative.

after all, those people in tents, who lost their home & jobs deserve to be dead any way. Right?
If you should ever be in a tent one day after losing all, you will eat your words.

That does not mean all of us have to agree with you.

Why didn't they take action to secure a home
( Like Renting one) If incomes an issue, get a job we have 3 jobs in our house.....I know we all have financial problems at one point or another but I would do everything in my power to make sure we are not on the streets.

            Have a great day everyone

My Grandma found herself on the street & bankrupt at 80 years old. That is after paying for her house twice, in full, then lost her house. Nothing of her bad doings. To make a very long story short, you can work & plan & bust your butt - but, There are no guarantees in life.

I was doing some research on this tent city and it goes back to the early 80's when people were getting 3.35 an hour. Remember that? reagan kept the minimum wage at 3.35 for his entire term while the whole country went into recession & prices soared upward.

Most of the people only go there for a few days to a few months. One of the biggest complaints was, they are better off at tent city than trying to rent an apartment & live on minimum wage as that was impossible to do.

Toronto, Ontario is another place until Home Depot kicked them out of the land. I also found it in florida, houston and Seattle... The city can range from 100 people to 40,000 people.

In one tent city, the people appointed one man as the mayor. LOL! Indians lived like that in tents (for only the heavens know how long) appointing one wise man as the chief.

I also remember seeing another place in New Mexico where people who have injury or illness cannot work & only get their SS checks or maybe veterans disability. The only difference was, In New Mexico, I believe they have a physical address.

Very few of these people 'choose' this. It is just the way life went for them and each person has a story as to what happened.

Want to see a real scary Tent City?

                    This is scary.

It also makes me wonder if it is coming to this & may be coming to this for millions of Americans, as well.

A blog from the conference about biology.

Garcia said she does not condone illegal immigration but argues there has to be a more humane way of handling those detained.
The $65 million Raymondville facility, sandwiched between a federal prison and a county jail, is called Tent City because it comprises ten huge tents on concrete pads. Each tent holds around 200 people.
Built last summer, the facility is surrounded by a 14-foot-high chain-link fence looped with barbed wire. It houses around 2,000 detainees, around 85 percent of whom are from El Salvador.
eh...but we just turn face to all this 'progress', until it happens to you or me.

Umm, I am not sure where you were living in the 80's, but it certainly was not the U.S., Reagan got us OUT of a recession, which was largely caused by the change of regime in Iran, (Iranian revolution, remember the hostages) in 1979 and and Carter's in ability to do anything. The next recession was not until 1990-1991.

                          I remember.

during the second term he did. he lost popularity his first term & it was the worse time since the depression.

and i certainly was living in factory land midwest USA where I saw all of our fathers lose their jobs as the factories closed shop all through the early 80's & the fathers all ended up making min. wage before retirement.
min wage never went up when reagan was in office but everything else did in fact the cost of living rose at least 20%.

Reagan objected to it while at the same time gave federal employees hefty raises- that is my main point.

There are "always" bad time for "some"...but now you getting into "your opinion", and not relating facts. The fact of the matter is, if we are talking about "recessions", there were only 2 during that time
late 1979 to early 1982, and then 1990-1991.

I don't mind your over the top rhetoric, it is entertaining, but I do mind when you start presenting your narrow view as "fact"

I am not talking about recessions. You are.

I am talking about minimum wage during a time. I am talking about Tent Cities & how people get there.

THE FACT I presented is: MINIMUM WAGE NEVER INCREASED WHEN REAGAN WAS IN OFFICE. DO you want to prove that fact wrong? please do.
Another fact I stated & will say it again: the period was extremely high inflation. Prove it wrong.

the 80's were a horrible time for factory & industry employees & right next to the days of depression through the entire midwest where millions of people went from 12 an hour to 3.35 an hour & I do not need to go thru pages of documents to prove that to you.

Wheelobrator, Bendix, Uniroyal- all of them. I LIVED IT!!!

I can say the same about your narrow view & over the top rhetoric but it does not make for a very good conversation putting others in the thread down.
It is like you have this thing for proving someone wrong all the time by putting them down. That is what people do when they do not have an answer to the facts presented.

Close the thread, delete my account, keep putting me down, Whatever floats your boat
