A Fort Wayne man is charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to his home that was in the process of foreclosure in April.
According to court documents filed Wednesday, Kevin J. Griffin, 36, of the 500 block of Dayton Avenue, set fire to his home two days before the home was to be sold as the result of foreclosure in April.
When the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to the fire April 15, crews found the blaze near the left of the fireplace in the living room of the one-story home. Griffin’s wife told investigators she awoke to the smell of smoke about 1 a.m. and woke up her husband, who got out of bed and told her the living room was on fire, court documents said.
Griffin and his wife evacuated the home, but he went back inside to rescue the couple’s pets. She told investigators they had a fire in the fireplace before bed, but she told her husband to extinguish it, court documents said.
An arson investigator searched the home and found the origin of the fire to the left of the fireplace, where no electrical outlets were located and no remains of candles or other items could be found as the cause of the fire, court documents said.
When investigators spoke to Griffin’s wife two days later, she started to cry and told the investigator she contacted the mortgage company to find out about insurance and discovered the house was in foreclosure because payments had not been made for 20 months, court documents said.
The investigator returned to the home and found the fire could not have come from inside the fireplace. He then interviewed Griffin, who eventually admitted that he had not made mortgage payments for 20 months and had not told his wife, court documents said.
He knew the house was to be sold April 17, so he started the fire in the living room, using a lighter to ignite a starter log in the woodpile next to the fireplace, the documents said.
