    Wall Street Journal article

    Bankruptcy is an epidemic.
An astounding 91,214 Americans declared bankruptcy in May, up 31% from the same month a year ago. More than 1 million Americans are expected to declare bankruptcy this year, a jump of nearly 50% from last year, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.

That means at least one in every 100 families will be affected by a bankruptcy.

It's a sign of the times: a combination of the housing and mortgage crisis, consumer debt burdens and the strains that rising energy prices are putting on household budgets.

In the first three months of the year, 516,000 new foreclosure proceedings were started. The delinquency rate (homes with at least one payment past due, but not yet in foreclosure) for single-family mortgages is now 6.35%, the highest in modern times.

Americans are now carrying $975 billion in credit card debt -- a nearly 20% increase in the past two years. Approximately half of all cardholders carry a balance, instead of paying in full every month.

The national average for interest rates on credit card debt is 12.38%. Yet many cardholders are paying "default rates" as high as 31.99%, applied to people who are late on payments or over the limit.

The sharp increase in the unemployment rate to 5.5% in May, along with the loss of 66,000 private sector jobs, is a clear indication that more people will have more trouble paying their bills. The economic situation grows more dire daily.

BK lawyers are making a killing.

I know at the law firm where my attorney is they had 1000's of cases for people filing BK's.

The situation is going to get much much worse with rising food and gas prices. If the current price trends continue for the rest of the year we could easily double their stated expectations on bankruptcies.

              I agree.
I can't believe how so many things are going out of the norm at once.

I know this is kind of sad to say but it almost makes me feel better about being in this situation. There is comfort in numbers. We are not alone. Just think of the thousands and thousands of others out there who do not visit this site.

Unfortunately the people who really need to know these numbers and what is happening in America are not listening or they are and they just dont really care.

Really many are just "not aware" that thier financial affairs are in great danger of crashing down on them...... They know money is tight, prices are rising, etc. BUT they do not feel that it is really affecting them that much until it is too late and everything is going wild on them........

Even the evening news keeps talking about bankruptcy, foreclosures, job losses and some just turn a blind eye and say..... that doesn't affect me..... THEN SURPRISE, IT SLAPS THEM DOWN.....

I never dreamed I would be one to be filing bankruptcy in my lifetime..... but guess what.... s*** happens to all of us......

It opened my eyes to my surroundings, jarred me to my very soul, and put me on a path of good financial habits....

One of the best things I ever did was filing bankruptcy..............

"It's amazing the paths that our feet sometimes follow in life".

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

We met with a BK attorney this week to discuss filing ch 7. He said this past month that there have been 1,500 bk cases filed in our district alone.I guess they are going to have job security for some time...
