And they STILL insist they are on the right path - unbeliveable.

I so hope our country's voters are smart enough to see through all the character assassinations/lies and vote the long-term Republicans and Democrats who supported Bush's policies out of office this time around. Give a new group of elected officials a chance to turn things around.

But it's going to take YEARS to undo the damage of the last eight years no matter who's in office. The piper always has to be paid, period. And in this case, it's the most vulnerable citizens in this country who are paying the most - our children. They will have to deal with this mess long after all of us are gone.
Not just the long term R and D, it is my fervent prayer that we replace these two parties. I'm hoping a few seats change, I might not agree with all of the Independents and third parties, but I've seen what the R and D can do and I think almost anyone can do better.

I'm hoping Cindy Sheehan beats Nancy Pelosi in the 8th district, not because I agree with Sheehan on all things or think she'd be overly effective but I think the victory would be symbolic and show Americans that there are options other than R and D and that they can win. (Of course Pelosi has severed like 8 terms more than enough for anyone).

I think the single most sensable legislation that needs to be passed more then anything else is the balanced budget amendment. I would love to see the constitution tell all future congress people that they can not spend more then they take in but also add a clause that they can never raise taxes again without a 2 thirds majority. We came close in 94 but it's a dead issue with this entitlement generation. It will never happen.

Not only would it help lower the debt it would automatically keep inflation in check.

Only 4 of the last 60 years had + budgets (1 year under Nixon, I think the year he resigned; 3 years under Clinton). However you have to understand that the debt still increased under Clinton those three years even with a supposed + balance budget because our current interest payment on the debt is not equal to the actual interest on the debt yearly it is less.

It is not just the R but also the D. Look at all the pork the D have stacked in every bill since taking control, the R did it before them, the D before them, the R before them. Its an ongoing cycle that if we want real change, if we want a brighter future for our children we must look to alternatives to the D and R.
Clinton's "surplus" really doesn't count. They had a surplus on paper but it was mostly the social security "trust fund" if that's what you want to call it.

It was still better then all the pork GWB signed off on causing a much larger defecit.

There is so much money from Iraq that we were promised. Instead of us getting money form the Iraqis to rebuild we end up funneling money into their economy to rebuild

GWB couldn't have signed the pork if Congress hadn't sent it to him. I do believe he should have used his Veto power more often however it is as much Congress fault as it is his. (Both R and D congresses).

Of course as governor of MA, Mitt Romney used his veto power more than all other governors combined who served at the same time. The Democrats in MA legislature overrode every veto and yet blame Romney for the economic shape of their country. I wish he had been the R nominee though because he had a history of vetoing legislature that he thought was filled with pork. He was the only person running that had such a record.
