Cell Phone - full time? anyone doing it?

    Good morning all!

In my quest to budget & lower my expenses as much as possible, I was thinking about having my home phone/landline disconnected. It's costing me about $60 per month (I do get unlimited long distance nationwide).

Our cell phone account survived our BK, my husband needs the cell phone for work and uses about 300-400 minutes per month, which his company reimburses him for.

We're on family plan of 1000 minutes and we've never even come close. Right now I don't use my cell at all. The cell phones are costing us about $88 per month.

I was thinking that I could disconnect my landline and use the cell phone full time. I have a nice RAZR phone with a bluetooth headset which is very comfortable to use.

It would save me $60 per month on my budget and highly doubtful I would go over on the minutes. But even if I ended up having to "up" the minutes on my plan, it would still be less expensive than the landline.

Just wondering if anyone here uses their cell phone full-time and if so would care to share how it's going to for them.

Like it? Hate it? Am I missing something obvious? Is cancelling the landline a mistake?

    Thank you

    Full Time Cell User here!

We got rid of the land line as the only reason for having it was my computer...which crashed...that was $45/mo. that was just up in phone line...

It was very strange to disconnect but our cell phone plan through alltel for two phones is $79/mo. for free nights (after 9p.m.) and weekends with 10 anywhere numbers, even outofstate, that you can call totally free. Plus 1200 minutes included. That is saving my life as my mom talks forever when I call.

With the taxes & insurance, which I recommend you do not go without, the bill is about $100 for two phones...we never miss a call....unless we want to.

I have a computer at work so no need at home...if I really need access, I can go to the library.

I have the razor & my bf has an LG...it's working out great for us & is a $45 savings a month.

Since AOL went free...because I have internet access through Verizon, I also no longer have the $30 aol charge...so now I have an extra $75 to maybe buyr work clothes or put to bills.

    It works for us!

I plan to dump my landline next year ($50/month)

I will be getting high speed via cable hookup as a Xmas present from the kids, and see no reason to keep a landline. The verizon family plan with 700 minutes on our 4 cells for $110/month is enough since everyone we call is in-calling or free night/weekend for most everything else. We are splitting costs 4 ways and it is cheaper for all of us.

Many of my son's and daughters' friends are in apartments and no landline hookups since they are still "migrants" moving from year to year for school, better jobs, etc. This works for them. They are used to being always in touch, not having to wait for a phone booth (which are disappearing anyway!) or a land line at home.

Thanks for the replies. I've been researching this and have decided to go ahead and disconnect the landline.

I can always turn it back on if I decide to.

        Wish me luck!

In my case, I can't do that since I use DSL (which requires a landline) and DirecTV requires periodic landline connection.

If you do go all cell, make sure you turn on GPS for 911 calls on your phones so that you can be located in an emergency.

Thanks, I thought of that, but not sure my RAZR phone has that feature? I might be an add on (the GPS thing I mean).

Dropped my land line 2 yrs ago when I started using cable for my ISP. I'm not much of a phone talker and have a cheap plan and it's actually less than using a land line.

Nope! Especially since that ended up being my first collection . Short story - I cancelled the line, was out of town and busy with work for a few months and they continued to bill me, said I never cancelled. I told them I'm not paying but ended up doing it anyway after about a year....and that was the beginning of the downward spiral of my credit score.

OH! So I guess you don't have any regrets!

Thanks for the input, I'm about to call Verizon and do the deed right now.

I had a very bad experience with verizon (1.5 yrs worth)....since I switched to sprint, it's been great. Plus sprint is bk friendly as long as you didn't bk on them.

I use pre-paid cellular exclusively. $100 gets 1,000 minutes and lasts me a couple months or more.

                        No bills, no contracts!

I went the prepaid route before I went with sprint. Its good, but I had to activate new minutes every few months, .25 per minute, and since I didn't really talk much, it didn't do any good to buy a bunch of minutes. I would go back to prepaid if I had to, but for now, free minutes after 7pm and on weekends makes it more affordable for me....I hate this stupid contract though, 2 yrs, but I got a great phone for free.

My husband and I have never had a landline phone in our home as long as we've been together. We each keep our separate phone bills, and go with that, and we love it.

We seriously considered doing our cells full time but realized that if we were out and a babysitter was home with the kids that they would need access to a phone line in case of an emergency. I suppose we could look into adding a third phone and always leaving it at home but my kids would think it's too cool and play with it and probably lose it. We have Verizon right now and we have really liked their service. Don't know what it's going to be like when we renew the contract. If they will be expecting a bigger deposit or not.
