Ugh, I've gained more weight in 2008 than in the last 19 years..boo hoo

Ok, I used to pride myself that I was really good about what I ate and how much of it I ate.

I've been the same weight I was since high school. So for the last 20 years or so, I've always hovered below 108.

Last year, my jobs were all over the place and I was in my car travelling to jobs alot more and eating 'on the run' while driving. I know that didn't help!

So now I'm looking at more than 5# gained in just a year. Whereas I can honestly say, the last 19 years, I've been able to maintain a decent weight. Hell, I still wore pants that were from high school... lol

But now my pants are getting tight and that's not a good sign.

Did I all of the sudden hit some magical hormone which allows my belly to start expanding exponentially?

Granted, this particular holiday season was filled with more than just a chocolate or two. I never had this kind of weakness before. Heeellllppp!

Your body metabolism slows down tremendously when you pass age 35 and you have to increase activity to offset that or the pounds will creep on. Being a woman makes it worse. I force myself to go to Jazzercize 2 to 3 times a week and I am the Queen of Lack of Time, however by doing that I keep my weight the same as in my 20's even after 4 kids. The only other way around it is to invent a time machine and go back to age 20 again! LOL!

        poorgrammy.....weight gain is all relative

I know it doesn't sound like much to most.

        But to me, it's substantial.

If you weigh 200 pounds, then 5 isn't alot.

If you weighed 5 pounds and gained 5, then it's alot ....LOL

I can go up and down 5 pounds in a day or too. Water retention, hormones, who knows. 5lbs in a year is a very small amount of weight.

Gaining 5lbs in your late 30s is nothing. My very "twiggy" 13 year old weighs 112lbs and she is such a stick it is almost gross.

I am with Poorgrammy on this one. Boo hoo. Sorry.

I agree with this. Once you hit 30 it seems to slow down. I recently took up endurance running (marathons) as a way to combat it. Works great but can be very time consuming.

I don't weigh myself anymore, to depressing! I know when I went to the doctor's last year I had lost weight.

I don't know if there's an "ideal" weight for me at this point in my life, but I FEEL good around 125 which is what I weighed this past weekend. That's only 11 lbs. more than I weighed when I graduated from college, and I've had 2 kids and also ate like a pig over the holidays, so I think I'm doing quite well!

I try to eat healthy foods every day and walk a lot. I also take stairs whenever possible. I work on a 15th floor and take the stairs up and down every day -- no elevators for me! I also do weight bearing exercises 3X a week, at home. For the past 15 years or so my weight has fluctuated between 120 and 130 and that's just fine with me. A lot of weight gain may be water retention, so that's why it's important not to weigh yourself every day lest you become discouraged or depressed over something that is natural and temporary. Personally, my clothes are the best "scale." If they suddenly don't feel right, I know it's time to drink a lot of water and watch the carbs and the sweets for a couple days. It works for me.
