    This economy sucks rocks!

I'm the General Manager of a large hotel and have around 150 employees. Unfortunately, today I had to lay off 6 great employees. Do you know how hard that was for me???

One female had tears rolling down her face, then one guy had the look of complete panic. He said to me "how will I feed my kids?"

I've fired PLENTY in my career and that is a completely different story. But laying off good workers affects me emotionally.

    341 - 11/26 went smooth NO ASSET
Took 115 days after 341 - But Finally DISCHARGED 3/25/09

Couldn't you have layed off the bad ones instead? I am a manager in a trucking company. All trucking companies are doing terrible right now. I know how you feel.

That's what I did. I layed off the least productive and they were the last few that were hired. All 6 were hired within the last 6 months. Still hurt.

I don't envy you at all. Even in good times, laying someone off is not easy.

I work at a small hotel.

They have let 5 people go so far, 2 full time and 3 part time in the last few months. The manager is working front desk some, hours for the front desk folks have been cut back.

Business is running about half what it was this time last year. Reservations going forward are abysmal. I think the projetions to end of the year is only around 1.5% of rooms are booked and normally by now we'd be booked up for part of the spring.

It is going to get much worse before it gets better. What's even worse is they built a new hotel here in the county that's still under construction been under construction for over a year. Even if they opened with business so off I doubt they'd do good.

Relief...I know it is hard but it is part of your job as a General Manager and what you were hired to do. In good or bad times. It is extremely hard to separate personal and business. My oldest daughter is an RN and has a hard time not getting caught up with her patients and worrying about them. Just like you you are with these folks on a daily basis and then for some reason have to let them go. Rest assured they are aware of this economy and they are not the only ones being fired/laid off. All of us in some way are affected by all of this and any one of us can have the hatchet fall at any time. I certainly hope things pick up quickly for your hotel when this economy gets its shot in the arm...

You are so right Flamingo. Ultimately, the bottomline falls on my shoulders and I gotta do what I gotta do. I have to answer to the hotel owners, and managing their finances is what they hired me for.

I am blessed to have a hotel that is still doing very well. The owners have 10 hotels and mine in #1 in revenue but some of the others are really suffering. I think they are robbing "peter to keep some of the "pauls" afloat". It's like a juggling act.

In my fairy tale world there would be enough jobs for everyone. I'm just that kind of a boss. A boss with a heart, but my business side is taking over and that's what I am paid to do.

Sounds like you have had a bad week. I am sorry. Go take a long hot bath and try not think about it!

I had to layoff a few folks over the past two weeks myself...
