I may be away for a few days...

Got a call this evening that my dad is in the hospital. We'll know more tomorrow how he is doing. (Taken to the ER w/ blood sugar over 700. Not shocking-diabetes in family & bad eating/smoking/etc. habits. They're taking measures to get it down.)

I have become a bit addicted to this board (can't you tell?) so if I'm away for a few days-its because we're headed to SC.

You'll be in my prayers Staci. I have a diabetic daddy who's sick too, so I understand these things. Good luck!

Thanks all! We'll know more this morning after the dr's talk to my mom. I talked to her this morning-she had been having flu symptons recently, and when he started feeling bad they assumed it was the same. He got to a point where he was hallucinating & talking gibberish, which of course scared my mom. That's probably a good thing, because it made her get him to the hospital.

I read that diabetes can lead to kidney & heart issues, and this scares me as he is probably at risk for those already. (Heavy smoker for 40+ years, drinks alcohol on a regular basis.)

Update-he is stable and blood sugar is better. He is still really out of it & confused. And, they're having to restrain him because he is argumentative & wants to take the monitors off & leave. They have him on a heart monitor, and are running tests, including a brain scan & spinal tap. Dr. thinks he has alot of undiagnosed medical issues-we've been certain of that for a while!

Staci - my mom had diabetes too. She also had a litany of other medical issues too. Diabetes is controllable. My mom had to change her eating habits and do the testing every day but she managed and your dad will too. My prayers are with you and your family. Please keep us posted....

                    Staci,
I've been diabetic since the age of 3. There are so much other really bad thing to get in life, this one is controllable. I'm now 39 and have very little complications from my diabetes. as long as he relearns how to eat, and starts exercising, he'll do fine. there are so many web site out there for new diabetics with support groups and dietary planning its unreal. Good luck, keep up updated.
