    War of the Worlds

Just got my email yesterday. Wal Mart says it will arrive by Tuesday. Saw it with my boys 5x's. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!

Tom Cruise really jumped from star to actor with "The Last Samurai", this put him over the top and that kid, Dakota Fanning, what a little actress!!!!! Of course Tom isn't up there with Kostner's "Open Range" just yet. Kevin financed that flick himself. Duvall did one heck of a job in that film also.

The Cruise version was the book with minor updates. The original did not stick to the book at all but was still the best Sci-Fi flick made for many years after its release. If you missed it in the theatre, you really missed it. The sound made by the machines cannot be reproduced at home.

It was on the immense scale of Saving Private Ryan but Sci-FI style. Spielberg at his obvious best.

Next, Peter Jacksons King Kong with Jack Black and Adrian Brody. AAAAAAAnd Andy Serkis AKA Gollum or Smeagle as Kong himself. Promises to be an excellent film... but then I still like the original Kong and Mighty Joe Young with a young Ben Johnson whose last film I remember was "Red Dawn"... sorry, my son just reminded me he played the team owner in "Angels in the Outfield" another very good film.

Sorry if I stay waaay away from BK in this section of the forum, I really tend to look for anyone who likes old movies, etc... At work we have another old timer tech. like me, but he's from Britain. When we get together we never discuss trains, we attack our work and then sit and discuss actors, films and both of us can quote every line from Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy and when Ed Bishop (UFO) was born and which Dr. Who was best and a host of other pointless subjects. We are the only two people I know who know that David Warner played Admiral Tolwyn in Wing Commander!

What kind of reviews did the movie get? I may rent it whenever it becomes available...

HRx, HRx, HRx... tisk, tisk, this is one to see in the theatre. The sound the machines make just can't be reproduced at home. Mr. Spielberg gave these things one horrendous, scary, we're comin' ta get ya' way down, seat shaking base that blasted the theatre, absolutely marvelous!

And Todd... sorry HRx, my first stepmother was a newspaper critic and also owned a PR business as you've seen me say. Don't pay attention to reviews, I lived with "reviewer" and even bicycled copy 'round town. People who make money reviewing movies can be likened (yes, I stole this from "Life on the Mississippi") to gynecologists (ok, Twain said doctors) who can't really enjoy the site of a womans body but only see a medical specimen. Sci-Fi is all about the ride. If you have a decent plot, good acting and good scripting and a "can do" director you can just enjoy the ride.

How many understood that Starship Troopers was an anti war film and that Johnny Rico was really Paul Baumer (All Quiet on the Western Front) ? But the ride was still fun!

You could pick WotW apart as an anti gun (I tend to do this, it got engrained in me) liberal film. I don't care I just think the movie was alot of fun! The message only affects lower thinkers. Remember Johnny Wiesmueller as Tarzan? A whole generation grew up with "gun bad". Two words that influenced our thinking and then we could take pore l'il Bambi down... but I saw the re-release of Bambi as a kid, loved it, my kids saw the re-release in 1990? and i still loved it! And Johnny Wiesmueller, hey, he's Tarzan! Not liking tarzan is like not liking Mom, Apple Pie and Chevrolet!
