Well, Minny you got me to go to the Broward Humane Society tonight! WOW, that place is sparkling clean! They had a limited selction of dogs and most have a list attached. We found a "Rat Terrier" mix female about four years old and with the same temperment as Princess. We are two names down and hoping. They check your license and all and put you through the hoops because of all those trying to get dogs for "religious purposes" and other (food or fighting, no joke) things. The shelter is spotless and the people who tend it were afew young girls and mostly older ladies who really seem to show alot of love for the animals. I was surprised.

When I see signs in the parking lot warning you to take your pet inside before turning it over to anyone because it may be used in animal sacrifice I know that I am not long for this stinking armpit called South Florida, it angers me no end. But that is another story... I just pray to God that a big enough chain saw is one day available and the rest of the Country gets enough sense to cut this place away and give it up... it is not part of the real United States anymore, anyone don't like my opinion I'm not sorry and I ain't apologizing!

Back to the subject though, she is a sweet little girl who likes to cuddle up and i hope we get her. I was happy to note that all the dogs had a waiting list and many were already going home.

robivi3 - that is a wonderful story; I know you addressed it to Minny but I sure enjoyed reading it. I love animals - in particular dogs. My peek-a-poo lived 18 years. I was so heartbroken when I had to have her put to sleep. When my youngest son was born I always felt like I didnt give her enough attention. Fortunately, her vet was a wonderful, compassionate person who was genuinely upset about my Patticake dying. I got another dog for my son - a rat terrier named Brittany(he named her). She looks like the RCA dog - black and white and has such a personality. If I had the money I would have a huge farm and take all the pets out of the Humane Shelter and have them live there. I love Minny's dog pictures...they look so sweet. I hope you get the dog...I am so glad there are places out there who love them as much as we do.

Wow! I know the humane society here checks people out, such as needing calling your apartment complex if you rent, but I thought it was just to try to prevent the animals from being re-abandoned.

When I lived in Iowa, the local shelter, refused to let animals be adopted to renters..No matter their financial health...

Of course, this also increased alot of "Free Adoptions"

Of course, I drove 60 miles to acquire mine and have NEVER regretted the cost and time..

So happy to hear that you are trying to adopt another pet to join your household. Princess may be jealous - but they'll turn into "best of friends"......

You'll have to post a pic of the little one so we can all see!!

Believe me, you won't be sorry, the love will come back to you doublefold....

I got my girls a week before Christmas.....the Humane Society had "adopt a pet" week and I had to go get me two (couldn't split them up) .... lol.......
My girls were roomies on death row - so they were already buddies.

If I were in a position I would adopt a child or two....... and give them a good home. But financially, I've never been ale to do that.... I admire and respect those CAN AND DO adopt kids....really I'm jealous......

Yeah folks, when you adopt a pet its a responsibility just like a child.... you are their keeper, guardian, parent, companion, and best friend. They are your protector, stress releiver, best friend, confident, and devoted to you the rest of their lives.

Ya can't go wrong when you give a pet a home that's on death row...

DH drove about 4 hours, round trip, to get our Dixie. Found her advertised in the paper, Australian Shepherd w/ no papers. Called and talked to the owner, who owned both parents. They were selling the puppies, though in the end they wouldn't take any money from us for her. She had managed to injure her eye when she was 1-2 weeks old, is blind out of it, and they just wanted someone to take care of her. Think they were afraid no one would want her. We wanted her for a pet, nothing more, so didn't care if she wasn't 'perfect'. Perhaps it impressed them that DH drove so far..

Australian Shepherds are fantastic dogs.....

Someone hit one in front of our office a couple of years ago.... Course me, I gathered him up and run him to the Vets. Got him all fixed up and found him a home. ( I'm in good with the vet so he fixes them - I find the homes - GOOD DEAL!!) Never had a injured dog put down yet. One lost a leg, but we found him a home too.....

Yes, we love the animals......

Dixie has it good. Not only does she have us, but our next door neighbors have practically adopted her too. THey are dog lovers thru & thru. Have 3 of their own, and treat Dixie like one of theirs also. (They have 2 indoor & 1 outdoor.) My neighbor goes out every morning and gives their Lucky & Dixie treats, attention, etc. Its almost like I'm the boring parent, and they're the fun grandparents, LOL! As you know, dogs sometimes get excited & bark at each other. My kids get onto Dixie if they think she isn't being nice to her 'friends'-the neighboring dogs. (When the 2 little indoor dogs come out, they tend to be yappy and that gets Dixie & Lucky going also.)

Yeah, I too have "grand dogs", lol....
Neighbor dog meets me every evening at the mail box when I pull in the drive to get her "treat"......
The other neighbors get out and walk their dogs too.....
Mine just bark at all of them and try to make friends with them.....
We had one guy in the neighborhood (26 homes) that killed every dog he caught in his front yard.....
Needless to say - 2 dogs later....... he was spending a FORTUNE on sliced tires, sugared gas tanks, and scratches all over his new vehicles.......guess he got the message huh!!!
No problems out of him now...... he's more afraid of what will happen next time ..... We sent word that next time we would "tar and feather" him.........
I don't let my animals run loose, they are fenced. Though some of the neighbors turn their's loose and let them run sometimes. Some of them do not have fenced yards and use chains. I HATE CHAINS............... but know that sometimes thats the only way.
Anyone around here that abuses an animal - it amazingly disappears to a new home. WONDER HOW THAT HAPPENS!!! lol We even took the dog house at one place when we got (oops) the dog. Why should he loose his home too!!!
No animal or child abuse goes on around here, not in our neighborhood if we find out about it.

Our yard is fenced. Heavily enforced leash law where I live, and its safer that way for the dogs. Its not a huge neighborhood, but not tiny. 2 main streets and alot of cul de sacs. Its a little more than 1/2 a mile from my house to OUT of the subdivision, and I'm about 2/3 of the way in. When we first moved in, there was a dog that roamed alot. Was a hound of some sort, so low to the ground. He was slow, don't know how he never got run over. (Our street is long & straight...) Dh did call animal control, after talking to the owner countless times. (And from talking to neighbors, we weren't the first to talk to them and this had been going on for a while.) AC said that they'd be allowed to get the dog back, but only once. They did get him back-we saw him out once or twice, but nothing after that. I don't think AC came back out-DH didn't call them and since no one had before us I doubt anyone else did after.

I personally believe pet owners should be responsible, and shouldn't take on pets if they can't take care of them.

Ours is a quiet subdivision - 26 homes.....one way in and out - 3 cultsacs.........

Little kids ride their bikes in the streets and cultisacs - kids play basketball in all the cultisacs too. Lots of people out walking, excercising, and just roaming around the neighborhood visiting each other or working out in their yards.

Love my neighborhood - all good people - no BUMMERS!!
Been here 8 years and no problems between any neighbors other than the dog issue..... took care of that!!

Sure will miss it if I end up having to move....

Big Townhome, 1986, small yard, fenced (well, it be refneced soon, hurricane). Right off a soon to be main road, ugh. Former, horse & cow country. The yard is good only for small dogs. I prefer lapdogs (not metaphorically) like my Princess. She will not step outdoors without a leash unless I give her explicit permission. We leave the door open to load, unload, etc... My wife says that unless I'm home she won't go one inch beyond the front door without her leash for my wife or my boys. She loves her home and likes a very limited outside life. Perfect small dog. Alot of people here have these huge dogs in this confined area. I don't get it, we don't have alot crime here in Sunrise so it's not security.

So these big dogs nut up, run all over and have to be chased down. I really don't see the enjoyment of confined areas and a huge "crap" machine. In TN we had several breeds including two Collies and I will likely also acquire two German Shepherds up there, that is the plan.

Where I used to live on the Beach after i went on my own the neighbors had a Shepherd mix that they left tied up and shadeless most of the time. He went wacko, absolute cruelty. The house I was in had a Pit named Billy. Billy was a good dog, but I don't like any other Pit. Well, the fence by the garbage cans was only about three feet high and the yard had a sort "hill" if you will which raised it slghtly. One day Billy was outside and the garbage man came along. He didn't like Billy jumping (you now how a Pit jumps, the entire body and not just the head goes straight up). So he puts the garbage can lid over the fence and holds it while Billy clangs her head on it! Well, Billy was pretty smart for a Pit and figured out immediately who was at fault. Billy came over that fence and lets just say that she took a sizeable chunk out of his butt. Amazingly, he admitted his mistake and did not sue, but Billy had to be put down because of it. I still think Pits are very dangerous.

When I was a kid, we had a pet german shepherd named Buster. There were a couple of times that neighbor kids would come in our backyard and he nipped them. Well, I recall when I was about 10/11 and my younger brother was 3, my brother decided he wanted to ride Buster. Only problem was that Buster was eating, and Buster bit him. My parents had him put to sleep, were afraid he was turning into a biter. In my logic, my little brother was the one who should have been put to sleep. (Hey-I was a kid!)

I was mad for a long time. I still remember when animal control came to pick him up, it was a truck w/ a bunch of compartments in the back of it. We'd had the dog for at least 6-7 years.

That's the crazy thing alot of shelters are doing today. They are trying to completly remove the dogs instinct to guard food sources.

I watched as some workers were checking a dog they got in after 2 weeks and they were saying "Gee, sad we have to put it down, but when you take it away from food, he gets mean"

Well, duh! Let me drag YOU away from your meal and see how happy YOU are!

Reminds me also of the home owner who had a 6' fence and a dog chained in a good posiiton and water and food nearby. Yep, 6 year old CLIMBS the fence..Yes, the dog did kill the kid, but as sorry as I am for that, the dog was never in the wrong...(Signs warning against entering also posted)

Oh yeah, the owner got sued, but won, if you can call spending $10,000 to defend yourself against a bogus charge a win in the first place....
