    Dave Ramsey

He is a little strange in SOME of his philosophies, but he strongly practices AND preaches paying in cash for everything that you possibly can, with the exception of a mortgage. If you don't have the money, you don't get it, period.

The only thing that I disagree with him on, is just having mountains of cash lying around. He preaches about having an "emergency" fund, and while this is great and all, I would not feel comfortable having $20,000.00 just sitting in a bank. That would make me UBER-nervous....

Anyway, read his book. Very insightful and informative.

I think this guy does seminars too. Keeping $20k in the bank should've make you lose any sleep that's what FDIC is for.

True, but I can just see soooo much more potential with that money investing it than just leaving it in an account somewhere.

It's nice having $10k to $20k of liquid funds in a money market account. While still investing other monies more aggressively.

I like Dave Ramsey okay, especially his 'anti-credit' philosophies. But sometimes he gets a little preachy and self-righteous for my tastes, which I think is the case with most any talk-show host. He certainly is 100% anti-bankruptcy, I do know this about him.

I agree with you on the preachy and self-righteous part. I hope that the man doesn't lose his mind, or his wife doesn't get terminally ill or anything like that that seems to happen to "normal" people.....

i wouldn't waste my money on any of this books or seminars................i just remember seeing him on one of those infomericals - i also remember them featuring one of his teenage daugthers - telling viewers how she saved up her allowance to purchase a two year old BMW convertible.

I began listening to Dave Ramsey's radio program around six months ago and have found it to be very infomative and helpful. I went against his advice about not filing bankruptcy, but only because I have a few special circumstances surrounding my particular situation that forced my hand.

As far as his daughter saving up for the BMW, Dave has a deal going with his kids in which he agreed to match any amount of money that they saved for the purchase of their first car. Knowing about this agreement puts the whole situation much more into perspective.

The daughter was getting an obscene allowance then. You generally find out that when a person gets real preachy and self righteous that he is preaching to himself. I think that they feel the conviction. He will fall eventually, you can pretty well count on him falling and some financial difficulty being exposed.

Thanks to my Dad's financial prosperity in the 40's, 50's and 60's my brother had a new '69 Porsche 911 L for College graduation, in '64 he had a 64 and 1/2 Shelby BRG Mustang and because it spun on the ice a '65 Delta 88 for school and a Mercedes 280 SE in '68. Due to downturns in the 70's I paid for my used (but it was one doctor owned beauty) '68 Charger for my graduation in '77. I think I came out ahead. God forbid I would let my 18 year old start out with a BMW, I would not if I could, in truth, I probably could afford it at this point, but it almost borders on debauchery as far as i'm concerned.

If you start spoiled at the top, what is left. My brother is proof.

Any parent that allows their new driver of a kid to drive a BMW is out of their mind... I mean seriously.

I had an old cop car that sucked gas, was a boat, and about 15 years old that my twin sis and I paid $800.00 for.....
