Let’s get to know one another better. Let’s find out what our member’s hobbies may be.
I will go first………..
My hobby is music. I have been a drummer since the age of 12 (I will be 34 next month). However, I played air drums for a very long time before……ROFL! Playing drums was all I could think about. It was all I wanted to do. I had such a desire to play, that at the age of 11, I made and built my own drum set. Now, I’m not talking about getting Mom’s pots and pans out folks. I mean I made the drums, cymbals, pedals and stands myself. It took me months to do and I wouldn’t let anyone see them. My Dad had remodeled our basement and there was a small room made (like an in-law suite) and I had the door pad-locked. I spent most of my summer in that room. When I was finished with the build, my parents finally got their first look and they were absolutely stunned. Not only was each drum round and were the correct sizes, but I also had working pedals for the bass drum and the hi-hats. I even made the cymbals out of some sheet metal I got. What was even more shocking was, I even made my own drumsticks………ROFL!!!!! That’s how bad I wanted to play. For the next few months, I would bang away everyday after school until I my parents would say, “Okay, that’s enough.” “It’s getting late.”
That following Christmas, I woke up that morning to find a real drum set by the Christmas tree. It was the real deal……..REAL DRUMS……REAL CYMBALS……….REAL WORKING PEDALS……….AND YES, REAL DRUMSTICKS. It was the greatest gift I have ever received. There were also a number of other gifts for me to open that morning, but I could have cared less about them. I wanted to play those drums! It was the greatest day of my life!
I have been playing drums ever since that day. It’s been 22 years now (not counting my days playing air drums…..LOL) and I still enjoy it. Of course I drive my wife crazy with it sometimes, but she understands it’s my passion.
I also play the bass guitar. I started playing the bass guitar about 2 years ago. This was one of those things I wanted to try out, but I didn’t realize I would enjoy that as well. I’ve tried a few other instruments as well over the years, but lost interest. Although, I’m proud to have at least given them a try. Anyways, playing bass is cool, but I’m not as serious about it as I am with drums. I’ll sit and learn a song on drums and I’ll work at it until I’ve mastered it, but with the bass guitar, if I don’t get it, I’ll set that song aside for another day.
My drum set is a 9-piece TAMA Rockstar with 4 Paiste Signature Series cymbals and Paiste Signature Sound-Edge Hi-Hats. I also use a double bass pedal (not 2 bass drums) and I can get 240 beats per minute on the bass drum (sounds like a machine gun). My bass guitar is a Yamaha 5-String jazz bass. The 5th string on the bass is for playing music tuned to Drop ‘D’, like Nickleback for example.
