Under the federal exemptions you have $17,450; unused portion of homestead to $8,725 may be applied to any property. My question is can I use the unused portion of homestead since I rent.

Yes you can. Make sure you file the proper paperwork with the courthouse though. Also make sure you keep in mind that you can only use the homestead allotment once in a lifetime.
