I don't know if I can list the name of the credit card company that did this, so I'll call them "CC". Short story: I had my own business for 5 years then went thru a divorce and everything tanked. I filed in May 05 and was discharged July 05 with over $50,000....I got a Providian card shortly after that. In January 06 I bought a car and my TU was still 678. I made a few mistakes and opened more credit than I needed (still haven't learned much, I guess).
Right before christmas I was logging into my Washington card (the one that shows you fico scores free) and saw that my revolving balances had shot up to $25,000 and my TU was now a 475! Well, I'd been hovering around the 599-606 mark all year long so I got a copy of my TU right away.
There was a CC there with an $18,600 balance showing charged off as bad debt, acct closed by credit grantor. I first called TU to dispute, then got the results of the investigation- the same info was still there! But, now I had the full account number to this CC so I called them up. I had noticed that the BK balance on my "real" card was the same as the "past due" balance on the "fake" card. He had to get a manager and here is the explanation: this CC company creates a separate account to track their write offs/losses which should not show up to the credit reporting agencies. They said I should call back Thursday and the corrections should have been made by then. Did I get an apology for them dropping my score 125 points? No. We'll see how fast this fixes my score. I can't believe I've been working this hard on this to have it ruined in one month....
