How long does ch7 stay on your credit history?

I filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in December 1996 but it shows on my credit report that it was closed in April 1997. At the time I filed for bankruptcy, I was told by my attorney that it will stay on my credit for 7 years. Now, people are telling me that it stays for 10 years. Is this new or was my attorney wrong, 7 years ago?

It stays on for a minimum of 7 years but can be reported for up to 10 years.
