    Can I keep my car?

I plan on filing Ch. 7 myself (without an atty) and want to know how I can keep my car. I am one month behind right now. I'm upside down in equity by about $800.

Since your filing Pro Se, the easiest way is for you need to bring your payments current BEFORE you file chapter 7. The few other options are more legally complicated and risky as they cannot guarantee that you could keep the car.

You need to get current and stay current.

can you keep the car if you were never late and filed for other reasons?

Assuming you do not have equity beyond your state's exemption amount and you are current on payments, yes, you can keep the car. (also, it assumes the cost of your car is reasonable...i.e., if you make only $3,000 per month, but spend $900 per month on a Mercedes, the court may balk at allowing that expense).
