My sister pays 100 or more a month for phone service. I pay about 120 per year.
Phones cost a lot especially with a contract. I have been using a VIOP phone for a few years. With a recent computer the sound quality is good and you can even do video-phone. There are computer to computer telephone like IM's like a certain Messenger with voice. I am not here to actually shill for any of them, but for the last 2 years I have used a VIOP. I like this particular one because you don't need a credit card to pay for it, just a Paypal account, where you get funds from your bank account. It is fairly cheap. 36 dollars for voice mail, and Pro package, and also 24.00 to buy a number (When you buy the pro package you get a huge discount on buying the number). people can call your computer from a "real" phone. You have the voice mail, and so on, and you can call all others anywhere in the US and Canada for absolutely Free (36$ per year) The Pro also allows you to call any other country at "local" rates-- and they give you a hefty amount of clams to do the calling, in case you meet someone in Ireland. I haven't studied all the services yet, but I was thinking (before posting this) that this is also a way to prove that the 20 bucks a person pays for cable internet is not a Luxury. You can actually get cheaper phone rates and get all the newspapers and magazines you need, (I mean, NY Times is free on line) thus, If they say internet is a luxury you can say how much money you are actually saving by using it.
What does this mean? I can talk for "HOURS" for free!!!
(If you didn't calculate, that was 50.00 per year phone service, all calls paid for-- that is all you will pay on your bill till next year).
Small Print: I also have a small a pay as you go Mobile that I have as an Emergency phone. It costs 20$ every 3 months. The VIOP I have does not have 911. It is best to have an extra emergency phone.
Any other interesting ways to save money?
