Federal VS state exemptions

Is it possible to use federal exemptions rather than state exemptions? I live in Pennsylvania and it looks like they do not allow much in the line of exemptions,but i remember reading somewhere that you can use the federal exemptions in Pa. I don't remember where i saw that but if anyone knows how that works i would be grateful. My lawyer is hard to get hold of and i am also trying to put some time between my last cc charges and my filing date.I am told you can't have any charges for at least 60 days?

In Michigan you have the option...I used it. Federal gave me $40,000 exemption on home...all else was rolled into wild card. I lost no possessions (however I do not have boats, RV's, etc). Small charges on CC are okay; any large purchases will be questioned.
