    I think I'm Being Served

Got a receipt for a certified letter in my mailbox today...have to go pick it up tomorrow. It's from a local zip code. Question: do collection agencies ever send their initial letters by certified mail or is this most likely a summons?

Payoff date for lawyer is 3/14 so I am not too concerned but the curiosity is killing me!

Most likely a summons if your several months past due on a debt..... Most come certified mail...

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

Unless it is small claims court, service of summons is usually NOT done by certified mail.

In any event, go pick it up. If this item is something official, the operative fact is that it was SENT, not that you received it. So there is no harm in you picking the item up.

Thanks. Turns out it was correspondence from the city about my business license--fees are past due. Of course I know that and was going to pay them on the 21st after I pay the lawyer but they want them by the 11th. Sigh. I am going to call them Monday and see if they grant me another 10 days...I really want to get the lawyer paid first!
