So I found a way to pay my light bill but I'm still in trouble...

I can pay my light bill if I don't pay my car note. Which by me is fine. I'd rather have electricity.

Here's my dilemma though... We are so far behind b/c in December DH got his hours drastically cut back and then in January our health insurance premiums were raised by $125 a month. They promised dh a raise of $1.50 an hour which would have covered this easy and put him bringing home extra money but as of today's paycheck still no raise. So here we are deeper and deeper in debt and we keep having to spend more and more on gas for our vehicles. We live in the sticks and my commute to the nearest doctor's office or grocery store is 65 miles round trip. Dh's commute to work is 90 miles round trip.

What would happen at this point if I let my vehicle go back?? I just don't see how we can afford the note anymore. Even If I went back to work full time 40 hours a week I would only be making $400 a month by the time I pay for gas, Income Taxes and babysitting for my 2 kids.. my car note is more than that.

What do you think?? I'm going to try and meet with my attorney to see if he will discuss this with me. After the trustee took our income tax refund this year we are now at 88% payback so I realize if I let my car go back it may raise our payment somewhat but it shouldn't much right since we are so close to 100%??

Alright, let me have it...all your thoughts on this whole situation. Dh was offered a job making 150K per year which is twice what he currently makes but they don't offer health insurance and me and the kids really need the insurance. I would be scared to death to go without it and due to my multiple health problems I can't get any insurance to cover me except a group plan through an employer so changing jobs isn't an option.

Do you live the home your in? Do you rent?
I think if you got health problems I would move closer to town
and as for new job with no health benefits does the extra money
he will be making cover a medical bill when it arises and still leave positive cash flow?

You can also open a corporation doing what ever you do and bill for services as a contractor and get your pay this way then its easier to get health insurance if buying for a company?

With the substantial raise in pay, would you be able to afford paying for COBRA health insurance? That is for 18 months, and then maybe you could afford to carry a policy on your own??

      Just a thought

Just another thought, since you and the children have health issues and live in the "boonies", would it be wise for you NOT to have a car?

since you have lass income and are having trouble making ends perhaps you could have your attorney amend your plan?

Moving isn't an option. We own on our home and can't sell it. It's on 65 acres of family owned land. I could get by without a car because my in laws live next door and they have a spare car they can lend me if an emergency arises.

That's a good thought though about the Cobra. We probably could afford the Cobra premium if dh took the new job. THat would help substantially.

Hmmm, I just got off the phone with my finance company. Turns out the car is worth 18K and we owe 24K. I'm figuring if I let it go back they may get around 15K at auction leaving us with 9K to repay. I'm seriously considering doing this I just need to know what it will do to my current BK.

Oh Boy, do not count on getting close to what you think or the NADA states for your car. Most cases they go for wholesale and that REALLY stinks, you will be left holding the bag for what is left on the loan and still be in the same boat basically you are in now.

I do not know what it will do to your current BK..

That's true but my vehicle is completely loaded out. It has every imagineable option on it and it's in excellent condition.

Oh I am sure it is very nice, I did not mean to imply that. What I was saying is...no matter how nice/excellent/loaded these vehicles are....people @ auctions go for the deals..rock bottom deals and the finance co. is just happy to get something...as they are not in the business to sell cars and they are just going to come after you for whatever balance is left on the loan. I just wanted you to realize this. In the end, you have to do what you think will be best for you and your family.

Wow! I just got off the phone with my attorney and that was too easy! He says that the trustee will NOT take our IRS rebate check so that will be some extra money coming. In the meantime he said it's OKAY to take a 041K loan and pay the light bill with that. He said since we are borrowing it from ourselves that it's fine as long as we can make the payment. So I took the loan which will bring us current on ALL our monthly bills. And I swear to you if they don't give dh his raise soon he will be looking for other employment. This is getting ridiculous. I'm cutting some things in our budget in the meantime though to help alleviate some stress off of me.

Thanks for listening to me everyone! Really I mean it! I wish I could make my dh understand that it's perfectly fine to live life without Satellite TV and we don't need a home phone and a cell phone just one or the other. Gosh He just doesn't get it!

The FIRST thing to cut is satellite TV. That is entertainment, NOT a necessity!
My wife wouldn't give me the option!
With 70K more income, you can definitely afford alternative insurance and come out ahead.
Why did you guys get a car with all the bells and whistles? How old is it?
Anyway, glad things worked out. I knew it would with the 401K.

Out of curiousity, MM, why did you get an expensive car? I was amazed at how much your payment was! I figure if you can ask others a question like this, you wouldn't mind satisfying my curiousity.

                              Querty,
I was upside down on my previous one and it was added into the payment. My car is only a $18K car. In 2003, We were in great financial shape and bought a new 2004 Toyota. We drove it off the lot and knew we were taking a hit but thought we'd keep it until it was paid off. It was only a 2 door and we went through 3 sets of tires in 2 years on it...so we got rid of it as it wasn't good on gas either. We rolled in about 13K of negative equity. And no, I don't mind at all answering.
Our financial problems didn't hit until 2006.
