No Gravy 09-08-2008, 04:37 PM I don't understand why my microwave choose TODAY to die!
Under the rules of the "New Filers Curse", isn't it about 5 weeks too early?
Bother.

Ouch! And it couldn't have been a desktop 'puter, which are easy to swap out CD drives.

AaaaaaaMEN! I remember someone saying that it was more likely that by the time we all got to the point of filing, that everything we had was worn out, almost broken, etc. Thats probably true...but I like calling it the New Filer's Curse, just the same.
I think I figured out why the average American family moves every 7 years. Because most appliances hit their end-of-life about that time. My garbage disposal gave up the ghost a month ago. When I replaced it I checked to find out what the average life span was on a disposal, and when I saw "7-10 years" on a whole list of common appliances....I got worried.
twuoo 09-09-2008, 02:44 AM Try the Salvation Army for a microwave. You can find a good deal there. At least a unit that can carry you through for a few months. Bring something organic you can test in the microwave.
Say, a small container filled with water.
There's usually an electric outlet somewhere in the store for you to test electronics.
If your container catches fire or the water doesn't get warm/hot, it's probably good idea to select another one....LOL :D
If you can get to a samsclub or costco, you can nab one for around $40-60.
I can't remember what now, but I do recall when I filed, I had the dominio effect of things to go wrong too.
ready2puke 09-09-2008, 10:01 PM Well I blew out two computers and a cell phone all in the last 2.5 weeks...Im in electronic hell...
ready2puke 09-09-2008, 10:02 PM Also check out Craigs List....good deals there too..

Good ideas, thanks! I didn't use it all that often anyway, I might rough it for a bit.

Absolutely, Craigslist consistently has good deals on so much stuff. I have bought and posted a lot through them the past few months. Highly recommended.
BROKENN 09-12-2008, 10:10 AM I swear the stuff **knows**.......
soleprop 09-12-2008, 10:36 AM bahahaha - oh ok so i was thinking about this the other night: our stuff knows we filed and decides to 'help' us feel poor by breaking on us. but -- what the heck is with so many of us getting better jobs or raises or bonuses after we file? it's like the other side of the bk filer's curse is a blessing that unfortunately causes 341 stress and panic, lol :D
Keebler 09-12-2008, 01:13 PM First, you should realize that filing was just a few weeks away for nearly a year...
We lost a connecting rod bearing on our main vehicle last summer on the way home from getting medical treatment in another state. -- not good. We ended up letting the truck sit all winter waiting to file because it didn't make sense to fix it and then lose it -- but we didn't file. Right after the first of the year we replaced the engine with a new one I got from eBay using our tax refund -- yay!
This fall we finally filed and found out the Credit Union won't give up on the cross-colateralization on the repaired vehicle so we're going to lose it -- boo. A week or two before the 341 meeting the transmission gave out on the vehicle so they'll get it back broken -- again.
If I can only convince them to abandon it here I'll fix it back up again and drive it another 100,000 miles. Maybe bad things happen for a good reason!
soleprop 09-12-2008, 02:38 PM lol!
No Gravy 09-27-2008, 08:27 AM I swear the stuff **knows**.......
I think so, too! It's plotting against us, for sure. And they all like to gang up on me, and all go out at once, like they all go on strike.
But seriously, I think I've figured out why the average American family moves every 7 years. That's just before the time that appliances, carpet, roofing, siding, etc starts needing to be re-done or replaced.
BROKENN 09-27-2008, 08:32 AM I know!!! We fixed the kitchen and bathroom, two months later the irrigation and a pipe goes!!! AAAGGGHHHHH!

Ohhhhh maaaan, what a ride you had!
Yeah, it's funny the way life takes twists and turns on the way to filing, isn't it? I've read advice from a couple of "old-timers" in here, advising other people to basically wait until their employment and/or life situations were stable before filing (as long as you don't have anything to be taken in a judgment). I'm glad I saw that advice.
I *was* planning on filing pro se in October...but a couple weeks ago I got a notice that I'm a member of a class-action lawsuit, two in fact (against the same ex-employer), and that suit has already been settled for $3million, it just depends on how many of us respond as to how much each of us get (after the attorney's 30% of course).
The date for finalizing the suit is October 29th. I'm going to wait until after I get that check, which should be at least $3k, and use half of it for the attorney to file. I *could* file pro se if I had no other choice...but the more I get into this, the more I realize that if at all possible, I'd really feel better having a good attorney on my side.
My house is in foreclosure and the end of the redemption period is October 23rd, but I checked the lender's foreclosure website, and they have foreclosure sales scheduled through Feb 29, 2009....and I'm not listed even in the "pre-foreclosure" section. So I think I can wait a few months to file.

In June, when it was clear that there was no way I could keep the house (and don't really *want* to, anyway), and that it was just a matter of time before I'd have to leave....the garbage disposal gave out. It couldn't have waited just a few more months, could it? lol
I replaced it, myself (*flexes muscles*) and the new disposal cost $79, which was and is a lot of money, and yet...I kinda had to do it.
As it turns out, it looks as though I'll have until at least February or March 2009 before I have to leave here, so I'm definitely glad I replaced it.
I woulda just used that $79 for something frivolous anyway....like food or gas.
:)

I am glad you may have some fortune on your side! Getting a lawyer is a luxury for nerves :) It is good to have an atty by your side!
No Gravy 09-27-2008, 10:07 AM I am glad you may have some fortune on your side!
Thanks! By the law of Karma and averages, I was kinda due *something* positive. I'll still believe this is really happening when I see - and cash - the check!
I've been a member of probably 10 class-action lawsuits over the last couple of years. All I've ever gotten was one pair of ear buds, from a cell phone company I no longer use. Whoppie, eh?
When I sat down and read these papers, and saw that "though [blah blah blah] is not admitting guilt, they have already offered to settle for $3 million dollars..." They settled because they're guilty as hell, but usually that's beside the point.
So it's a good thing that I'm still living at the same place as I was 5 years ago, when I worked there!

I'm thinking so, too. I really liked the last guy I met with. I hate to spend $1,500 and yet...I could stand to lose more than that, should I go pro se and screw something up. Since the lawsuit money (if it does come through) is like "found money", I think it will be well-spent.
