I know alot of us get sedentary in our driving habits.
I recently landed a job with a driver's rehabilitation company. But I wanted to talk about something else.
The majority of accidents happen during left turns. It doesn't matter if you have the light or the right of way. YOU NEED TO WATCH ALL TRAFFIC AROUND YOU BEFORE YOU MAKE A TURN. Or, if there is traffic turning left in front of you as you are going through an intersection.
I have to say that a driver turned out in front of me last year, while she was making a left, gave me absolutely no time to stop, and I hit her. Prior to her, I had been accident and ticket free for 15 years.
Tonight, I was getting ready to make a left hand turn and even had a protected turn light. The turn that goes green or signals an arrow to indicate that it is safe to turn.
There was a car in front of me making the left as well. I could see from my vantage as I was approaching, there was a car in the on coming lane, getting ready to sail through the light. IT HAD NO LIGHTS ON.
Well, the car in front of me was in too much of a hurry or didn't see the car. The car turning left clipped the on coming SUV. The SUV completely flipped over right next to me and landed on it's roof.
I immediately pulled far over to the right. There was a gas station where I parked. I ran over to the suv. But it was a very busy intersection, so there were already about 8 or more people running towards the car as well.
There was a lady, maybe in her 30's that had gotten out of the suv. She was luckily unscathed. Not a scratch. She seemed quite shaken up...obviously. So I went to hand her my cell phone and she got hers out of her pocket.
Other people came up saying the police were called. I didn't see what happened to the passenger(s) in the car that was still in the intersection. Other people were already going to aid.
I told the lady she didn't have her lights on and other witnesses said the same thing. I was gonna hang around to give my report to the police, but there were so many witnesses, I didn't think I could add much except for the fact that I watched the whole thing unfold.
Within less than 5 minutes, there were all sorts of police cars and ambulances.
From where I was, it could have been an avoidable accident. Both cars were at fault. The lady in the suv with no lights on, trying to get past the light when she should have stopped. And the car turning left that should have just waited.
Sometimes things are just unavoidable. That's why they're accidents.
So please, tell all those you love to take special precautions when making any sort of turns. You might have the right of way, but you could also be dead in trying to assert your "right."
For those of you with aging parents, tell them it's better to make 3 right turns to get to where they need to go than to make one left turn sometimes. Their reaction times and judgement just isnt as good.
