Household Exemptions

Per federal exemption:

$475 per item in any household goods up to a total of $9,850

We are both filing so I assume this gets doubled as our home exemption gets doubled since we are both filing.

My question is how do they verify these exemptions? Do they come to our house and walk around and try to inventory everything?

You are correct on the doubling for a couple filing joint.

I have seen some posts on here where a trustee has assigned an appraiser to go to a home but from what I understand that is very very rare.

My attorney just asked us to give garage sale values to the items in my house which I made a very detailed list and he then summarized into categories.

It is very hard not to be too anal on this I know I was but be careful about overvaluing stuff. When you value it think if you were having a garage sale what you might actually get.
