"My bathroom. The exercise bike showed up while I was gone one summer, then the vacuum a little later. The bike is useful as a clothes rack. Time for a bathroom story. One time I ran out of toothpaste or floss or something, so I opened the medicine cabinet looking for more. Instead, I found the bathroom cabinet full of my old prescription bottles. I then realized I'd never thrown a prescription bottle away, I'd get new ones, and the old ones had just disappeared. I'd never thought about it. I confronted my mom, and she told me she was keeping hers too, and was saving them to cut the labels off so the prisoners wouldn't know what medications we were on. I told her that was crazy, and that I was going to throw mine away. A few days later I went to do that, only to find they were all gone. Mom took them all, and hid them in a box somewhere so I couldn't throw them away. They were out of my way, so I didn't pursue it any further. I make sure to throw my old bottles away now though."

Hoarding Syndrome

That's nothing. We have an acquaintance whose house looks ten times worse than that. Stuff is literally stacked to the ceiling.

I also had an elderly aunt that became so sick we had to have her taken to the hospital. When we started cleaning up her living room—you only had a very narrow path to maneuver in—thinking that she might be able to return home, it took 19 large lawn & leaf type garbage bags to clear the garbage out of that one room. The aunt went to a nursing home.

We had tried to help her clean and all before, but all for naught.

I just got through looking at all the other pictures. Yeah, this person could give our acquaintance a run for her money. Only picture living with all of this PLUS a giant horse of a German Shepherd dog that is constantly in the way, because there is no place for the poor thing to go.

These pictures are getting me worried. My garage looks like her house...

But I only save "valuable" things. I recently threw out some 50 year old electrolytic capacitors, for example - as they were getting smelly. (a joke for the techs here.) And I'm seriously thinking about tossing the peacock feathers from my mother's old house.

But you know what they say about one person's junk being another's treasure. Why would I save a 20 year old 100' roll of 1/8" solid copper wire, or an old discarded piece of test equipment? Well, I sold the Cu wire to a scrap dealer for $250 last year, and the junked Bird bridge brought in $350 on e-bay. It looks like a big pile of junk to most, but to me it's my retirement fund. Safer than the banks these days.

Hey, I still have, and cherish my grandmother's 1940's manual typewriter. When I was 4 years old in 1948 I learned how to type on that one, and by age 7 typed 30 wpm.

Hey, I agree. And my mother's house, which looks kinda the same is going to be my inheritance someday. I'm glad she hasn't thrown anything out since the 1940's.

After looking at all the pics, I have to retract (some of what) I said. My mom isn't quite that bad. Showers and other necessities are still accessable but there are boxes everywhere (with treasures in them) and every cupboard and closet are crammed.

Drives my Dad nuts.

I think DH would have the house like that eventually if it wasn't for me. He wants to keep everything, he might need it some day. As for myself, if an item doesn't have a "home" I get rid of it.

The Mrs. Aunt saved empty boxes. She would box them up in the largest box, put brown paper around it with string and mark it empy boxes. She had multitudes of them. 'Hub

DEAR GOD. I cannot imagine! And I thought my Great-Grandmother was bad!!!!

She does have some collectibles in plain sight though - she has a roy rogers lunch pail in excellent condition.

All of us have "something" that we collect...... either in small amounts or LOTS OF IT......
Me, I collect craft items and make crafts. I can take "anything" and make "something" out of it.
And yes, my garage is overloaded with craft items. I seem to keep collecting when I really don't NEED any more....
We keep things that belonged to our parents (just hate to part with it), we keep sentimental items, Christmas presents of long ago, memories of family members from the past (grandpas watch, grandmas glasses etc)
Little by little it all accumulates into a LOT OF STUFF laying around
All this summer I have been in the process of cleaning out my garage. Many boxes have not been open IN YEARS..... don't even know whats in them.
Its amazing at the things I have found hidden away. Much of junk to someone else - but little "treasures" to me. Bits and memories of the past. Things I have no use for anymore, but just hate to part with.
I've fixed boxes of "treasures" for everyone in my family.... brothers, aunts, uncles, neices, nephews. Memories for them to take a trip down memory lane.
Now what they do with them is up to them....
At least, now they are out of MY GARAGE.................... and my life is less cluttered.

I was amazed at the antiques I ran accross in going thru things. Lots of stuff from WWI and WWII.
