    Declined for Secured Card

Filed for Chapter 13 in the beginning of September, and had my 341 today. Prior to filing, I opened a new checking and savings account with a bank that I've never had accounts with. I've been able to save a few hundred dollars into my savings account, and went to apply for a secured card through the bank today, for about half the amount that was in the savings account. The application was denied, which really surprised me. Has anybody else had experience with this?

Did you have the trustee's permission to apply for new credit? (I'd be surprised if s/he granted it after only a month. Even a secured card is considered 'credit', because you're billed at the end of a month for any outstanding balance.)
If not, simply making the application is, in many instances, grounds for dismissal by the court.

Depends on the common practice in that district. In our district we can take on up to $5000 in debt without needing the trustee's permission.

I didn't ask the trustee, but my attorney indicated that it would be fine. In our district, we're allowed up to $1000 without trustee approval.

Until you're discharged, I doubt you're gonna to have much success getting any credit, whether secured or not. Lenders seem to be extremely leery to do so, despite assurances you are not going to file on them, too.

          Discharged!! 9/24/08
