life sucks sometimes

So since I am home for a semester helping my parents file for bk...I was trying to register for my spring semester at my university and figures that they raised my tuition rate because I went on an absence ugh.

and the lawyer also said that my parents shouldn't pay for my tuition because the trustee might not like that and that if they were to give me money I have to write a note that I would pay them back at a later date or something and I don't want my name involved in that. I'm a dependent student who didn't receive financial aid this year either. all i want is to go to school I feel like crying

I am so sorry. I wish I had some advice for you. I can remember when I was still in school and had to self-pay. My parents made too much money for me to qualify for Financial Aid, and I couldn't apply without them until I was 24, married, or had a dependent child. Still not 24, but the other stuff has come and gone. LOL... I will be praying for you. I know that it all really sucks.

Sorry to hijack your thread, adaughter, but NIDII, this is the reason you're going to be okay. Here you are easing someone else's pain instead of wallowing in your own. What goes around, comes around...

Same to you, adaughter. It's so unfair, after all the help you've been to your folks. But it's so inspiring to hear a story of such a devoted daughter. Your time will come, and the lessons you're learning through their misfortune will be with you for your whole life - as will their love and gratitude, I'm sure.

Why would they raise your fees after a leave of absence? Most colleges allow a leave of absence of up to two semesters before you need to re-apply for admission, and that still won't raise your tuition, although there may be added fees for re-admission.

If you mean they will not give you a tuition refund if you dropped out in the middle of a semester, that is normal.

well my school is 6 hours away from me and they have a rate lock rule about housing and since I dont have a car I depend on on campus housing. so they raise the fees every year so anyone that stops living on campus at anytime looses their yearly rate from when they first started. I would have to pay as if I were attending for the first time.

OK, so it is a housing increase issue and not tuition. Since rental housing always goes up, and especially up in this last year, it's normal that the school would not give you last year's rental rate this year, after you effectively broke the lease. Would be the same if you rented an apartment you had lived in before. Landlord would want the present rental rate, not last years'. Leases and housing contracts lock in the rate for a year, so you are not subject to constant rent increases every month.

If your parents are able to loan you the money to complete your last year, you could just draw up a simple loan agreement with them, agreeing to pay them back at some small monthly or quarterly rate. The trustee isn't going to ask you to return the money, especially if it has already gone to pay for your college expenses. Maybe the trustee would attempt to recover the housing costs from the college, but it will never happen. So I guess I don't see the real problem here.

And btw, after your parents have their BK discharged and a year has passed, they could just forgive your loan and make it a gift. Unlikely trustee would ever care about the money by then.
