Texas License tags & surrendering a vehicle

Can someone who either lives in Texas or knows the law answer this question for me. If I surrender an automobile in Texas, does the license tag stay with the vehicle? And if so, do I need to notify the Dept. of Revenue that I no longer own this vehicle?

    Thanks,

    Ken

    Try this website:

I clicked on the question: I moved out of state. What should I do with my Texas plates?
    And the following was listed:

You do not need to return the plates. Our license plates are recyclable, but we recommend you deface the number before discarding them. The number on the plate is tied to your name and could pose a safety risk if not disposed of properly.

Just a suggestion, but I would click on questions relevant to sell of car, etc. I would go a little further and click on 'Vehicle Registration' found on the left for further verification.

However, If I were in your shoes, I would keep the license plate in a safe place for a year. Then deface the numbers and trash it.

I know in Arkansas it is not required to return the license plate. However, we have to Assess our vehicles each year by May 1st for Personal Property Taxes due Oct. 10th. It is at the Assessment time when I have removed a vehicle sold in the previous year or before 5/1 (assessment date) of this year. I think that is how it occurs. I just usually wait & call the assessor's office the last week in April and give my PPAN#. They pull up last year's assessment and ask me which vehicles dh and I still own. Our vehicle registrations plates (tags) are not due until 11/30 of each year. So we must Assess before that time..May 1st... or receive an additional 10% penalty.
