    Student Loans and Bankruptcy

    Hi all.

My bankruptcy is set to be discharged on Dec 26th
My question to you is I am a full-time student and need student loans for the 2006 school year. Can I still apply for these? Will I be granted them with a bankruptcy that hasn't been discharged yet on my credit? If I cannot get a student loan, I will have to pay $1,230 a month to pay for school. Any thoughts would be welcome!

    Thanks
    Joy

Best off speaking with the financial aid adviser at your school, they will know what will work best for your situation.

From what I understand, you cannot be denied federal student loans because of a bankruptcy- your credit history is supposed to be irrelevant, as the loans are given due to your financial need. They only care about your class standing (which year you are) and whether you're part-time or full-time. However, you probably won't be able to get private student loans...

Also, the 2006 school year doesn't start until August or September... until then it will be considered 2005 - 2006. Since you'll be discharged by the end of the year, just submit your FAFSA in January.

You'll have to ask them. When I spoke with a college counselor about applying for student loans, she said they couldn't be denied, as long as I HAVEN'T filed bankruptcy.
